Dunno, the Char got a lot of interwar-charm to it. Y'know, the time after WWI where tanks had juust been invented, but we hadn't had another war to test out what's good and what's bad ideas.

Also, the eyepiece provides a HUD for tracking so they can aim without needing to look down sights on the weapon. By the way, the Colonial Marines Technical Manual is one of the coolest pieces of weapon-related fiction. They put a lot more research and work into it than most sci-fi equipment.
