Cute little feature of most Soviet heavy armour... The un-stucking stick. In case the Ivans get stuck in a pool of mud, the tanks carry a high-tech device known as a 'crudely cut wooden log', which can be pushed under the tracks and driven over for more grip in shitty terrain. Beautiful in it's simplicity, adorable in the fact that it's a wooden beam strapped to the ass of a tank. It's most commonly seen on Russian and Ukranian tanks, where export-nations like Iraq or the Balkans have lost their logs to time. (From top to bottom,, T-90, -80, -72, -62 pictured. Present on -64, -55 and -54 too, but couldn't find good pictures. Some other vehicles sometimes carry one too.)
I thought I had seen that design before
why do the russians always put big tanks of what i assume is fuel on the back of a tank exposed to everything
Iirc they're external fuel tanks, not connected to the fuel tank inside of the tank. Therefore there is no risk of a fire spreading should they be hit. So really, its just to have more fuel. without changing the design or risk a fire screwing up everything. Might be wrong though. :v:
Rear_view_of_a_T-62A.JPEG[/t] why do the russians always put big tanks of what i assume is fuel on the back of a tank exposed to everything
They were for auxiliary fuel, essentially you were to run your tank off of that then jettison the fuel tank and switch to internal fuel when you were about to start fighting. This was to keep your tank from getting fucked by rockets and the like, as historically external fuel tanks were a fucking terrible idea. EDIT: To give an example, in the novel 'Generation Kill' there was a recorded incident wherein a marine shot a LAW rocket at the rear of a T-72, the Iraqis had not deemed it prudent to eject the external tank and the resulting explosion sent debris several hundred feet into the air and just about leveled a whole block. The marine somehow manged to undergo little injury.
1.) They are jettisonable but are connected to the fuel system. 2.) If you think the tanks are bad, the rear doors of BMPs are fuel tanks.
Correction: It was an AT4 and the tank managed to send shrapnel 'several hundred kilometers' with a piece actually lodging itself into a marines helmet wherein he suffered a severe migrane, as for the man who shot the AT4 he suffered only a minor concussion (at least thats what i gather, the book said 'dazed') and severe ear-ringing.

im getting this in the mail soon. Its an xythos mini revolver, I posted this gun here already a while ago, but this one is gold and it looks ever cooler than the tin one. edit: to those that dont know, this gun is a wee bit bigger than a U.S. quarter
Loading that thing has got to be such a pain.
Loading that thing has got to be such a pain.
if these guns weren't so expensive & rare, i'd walk around all day with a necklace made of these xythos and berloque guns. berloque:
Considering it was written by an imbeded journalist, I don't put much credence in "several hundred kilometers. Either a few km or several hundred meters.
Irregardless, that's what the book claimed, and to be plain I could definitely see an object perhaps about the size of a quarter or so doing precisely what was described. Maybe it was just a star-aligning coincidence from two completely un-related shrapnel sources.
Where'd you get it and for how much?
Where'd you get it and for how much?
Well the gold xythos is very very very very very very rare. I didnt even know they...existed anymore. some of these guns used are sold on ebay for +100$ in used condition (but very often ebay removes them so its hard to actually obtain them). The 24kt gold one I bought is part of some guys personal collection and it cost me 270$. I bought the last gold one in the dish case. I bought them from here a site that just opened up: http://www.bestshotpinfire.com/ He has more gold ones but they are bundled in this mint conditioned box with all the original contents (I have never ever seen this version) and it costs like 415$ He also has the nickel (tin? i dont remmeber) revolver kit for around 320$ like I said these are rare and very expensive, just 5-6 years ago u could buy em for 80$ and the price just keeps goin up. The berloque is around 160$ but xythos is cooler and complex looking.
[t]http://i5.minus.com/ir6de0mUhFUQl.jpg[/t] really though, itd just piss off whoever you fire it at, if you could even fire it but it would make a nice loud bang to tell people you need help provided you could actually fire it while being attacked
I don't think it's indended as a defensive weapon...
I don't think it's indended as a defensive weapon...
Its clearly an anti-armor weapon. The projectiles are so small they can slip in through the viewing ports. I know this to be true because I once spoke to someone who was in the army.
[t]http://i5.minus.com/ir6de0mUhFUQl.jpg[/t] really though, itd just piss off whoever you fire it at, if you could even fire it but it would make a nice loud bang to tell people you need help provided you could actually fire it while being attacked
It would be fun to play Russian roulette with it tho!

YES I got it in the mail today take a gander: Its like a call of duty gold skinned revolver XD
Yeah, it's actually not even supposed to fire live rounds, you're supposed to load 2mm pinfire blanks, then attach a 10mm flare launching piece onto the barrel, which then allows you to fire flares.
I have herd this before. But is it because firing live rounds would damage the gun? or was the gun intentionally made to be a signaling device/collectors item?

Or something out of AssCreed. Noh, make a video for us.
