I remember it getting popular because it was ~James Bond's gun~ in casino royale.
i think the last movie where he had the whole "palmprint coded" gun being his only gadget was kinda cool even though it only was effectively used once in the movie
Wasn't there some idea where a gun could only fire if the operator was wearing a ring that sent a signal allowing the gun to do so?

Yes, it was a S&W abomination.
Up until Casino Royale, where the PPK is used in the beginning of the film but the P99 is used throughout the remainder. In Quantum and Skyfall, it is the PPK and PPK/S
Shame really, I liked the P99 despite being short-lived in the movies.
So, since we all kinda like the P99, I guess, sorta; how about the carbine of same styling?

Ain't she pretty?
The FN FAL/L1 has to be the most stylish and bad ass rifle ever.
I mean, just look at the Rhodesian Scout pictures.
They are screaming "Bad-fucking-ass!"

Not quite, its like the VSS where it shares design features and some parts, but its not as simple as a basic parts swap. Anyways, the SR-3M is just the lame fattened up version of the proper SR-3:

I like the vsk-94 much better

I always preferred the look of the SR-3 to the SR-3M, it looks more like its own thing than a second generation AK clone.
It might just be me, but i find that viking spears are superbly badass

I'd do anything to have a cool hack and slash game where the protagonist wields one of these
Sandy Hook Promise, a group of parents of the Sandy Hook massacre, have launched an Innovation Initiative with members of the Silicon Valley technology community. This initiative will advocate for providing breakthroughs in new gun technology by providing grant and prize moneys.[14]
The smart gun is supposed to:
Reduce the likelihood of unintentional injuries to children
Preventing teenage suicides and homicides.
Limit the violent acts committed by criminals using stolen guns.
Protect law enforcement officers from criminals grabbing their firearms during a struggle.
If chip failure occurs one of two things can happen:
For civilian use, the gun will be set to not fire.
For law enforcement use, the safety system will be bypassed, and the gun will be allowed to fire.
basically they want guns that won't allow kids, teens, and criminals to fire them as well as allow any law enforcement person to have a master override...
i know they've had a tragedy, but cmon you have to be realistic about what you can accomplish
It will be practically impossible to design something like it that can't be bypassed easily. Pretty sure that's why all of those fingerprint scanning grip ideas were abandoned.

Maybe, if you had an electrically ignited cartridge with a tiny computer in it that only fires the round once an appropriate authentication has be received could it be possible. But then you have the issue of cost and the need for brand new specialised firearms.
The problem really is that firearms are basically purely mechanical devices. Trying to regulate that with an electronic override can work, and would prevent someone from picking up a gun and using it immediately, but once they take it apart it's all over. Just look at electronically-controlled door locks and the like; they'll keep a burglar out but if someone sits down and takes them apart it's a piece of cake to bypass the electronic component, because at its core a lock is just a moving bolt. A gun is at its core just a spring-loaded firing pin, once you sort out the trigger system you can make it fire however you like.

You also have the problem of getting approval from the people who see "gun" and "safety" in the same sentence and start vomiting out their rights and the amendments

For whatever reason I've always wanted to see an all-electrical (minus gunpowder) gun, though I know it would be impractical.

There are a few electronically fired guns out there, like the VEC-91

And ironically enough this thing also freaked out some people when it first came up as it used caseless rounds (sensationalized as "phantom ammo") which people thought would impede police investigations as it doesn't leave behind shell casings.

Medieval weapons classification is more of a spectrum than a bunch of boxes. Second to last on that list, for example, could also be called a warbill.

True enough but at the very least that one is distinctly not a Bardiche.

The Dror MG, basicly what happened to the M1941 Johnson's LMG Variant after the rights to the design got sold out to the Haganah (The precursor to the IDF) in 1948. It wasnt used however, due to its oversensitivity to dusty environments. Ultimately it got decommisioned and was replaced by the FN Model D (A M1918 Variant) in 1952.

Just so I can actually contribute to this thread, I'll say that I honestly like the look of this gun. I really do. It might have a sort of dated wooden stock, but I really like the aesthetic of it. Were these ever put into use by a military?

Nupe. It's the Madsen LAR. It's pretty much just a Danish AK, in 7.62 Neato. No one wanted it, so we made it in 7.62x39 and tried to sell it to the Finns.

They didn't want it either.

While it looks pretty swish, who can blame them. That barrel looks like its canted 5 degrees upwards.

Field tests showed it to be pretty equal to the Finn's own RK-62, but they obviously went with the RK since it's a domestic design, and way cheaper on top of that.

no most of the electronic gun concepts utilize an NFC tag that you wear on your person, which NFC by nature doesn't have a range outside practically touching, a more advanced concept has NFC tags on the holster, once the gun is removed from the holster it is primmed, a pressure grip keeps it primmed until released, so someone draws a gun and its armed until they set it back in the holster or let go of it. this is probably as close to a perfect system as you can get, though NFC's weak range is the one problem here

most of of these systems are about keeping the gun from going off when its been taken or removed from an officer or the owner's possession, so you don't get shot with your own gun, they probably all wouldn't stand up to a hard dissasemble, nor would any since these are all integrated after the gun is assembled, now if you had an electronic safety that was built into the gun from the design phase, like say the G-11's clockwerk magic, you could do it
