Can we stop with the Corgis
Can we stop with the Corgis
Could you not de-rail the thread? We're talking about super futuristic and ancient corgi warrior weapons gosh!
Well, seeing as everyone else has a favorite edged weapon, guess I'll have to join the trend: <3
.22 on top, .410 on bottom
For when you need a little more firepower than the usual.
[t]http://i.imgur.com/DiiJIpW.png[/t] Ten points to anyone who can guess why the non-entirely-straigt gladiuses... Gladius's... Gladii? Why the non-straight Roman stabby-thingamajibs are wider near the base of the blade.
Its to prevent the sword from rattling around in the scabbard since the sword would have its widest with like 10 cm down from the point otherwise.

I recall there was a supposedly giant knight who could bend a penny between his finger and thumb, and he had a big ol' fuck-off giant sword. Google comes back with shit but I remember he was posted in here once or twice.

Khopesh is probably my favorite sword, if only for its silhouette. [t]http://i.imgur.com/BwZ8F5G.jpg[/t] And apparently they were generally short enough to justify having one in each hand.
And apparently they were generally short enough to justify having one in each hand.
Why? Why would you ever want two identical weapons? Got any source on this ever being used? I haven't heard any actual, real accounts of dual-wielding outside of parrying daggers and the likes.
I'm not saying that it actually happened back in ancient egyptian times (it probably did at at least one point) I'm just saying, given the sword's very short length and light weight, it could easily be dual wielded effectively.
Black Iron Tarkus probably
that's a videogame character...
You see, the problem is, 'dual wielded effectively' is an oxymoron.
The legitimate only case that I can think of where it is "effective" is a main gauche when fencing, and that's for parrying, not actually fighting as such.
Why have another sword when you can have a shield?
I also wasn't aware of the katana being terrible, i thought it could cut through few things in one swing
The whole folding technique with different hardness of steel was specifically to try to compensate for the fact that Japan has really shitty iron, and not much of it. Authentic katanas were well-crafted because they were exclusively the weapon of the elite, but as far as weapons go they were brittle, poor for thrusting, and limited to fighting unarmored peasants and soldiers wearing nothing more substantial than bamboo armor. Compare to medieval European swords which, while on average of lower quality (since everyone had swords, not just nobility), were much more functional weapons, and a well-made longsword is objectively superior to a well-made katana in literally every way. Basically the Japanese never progressed beyond pattern welding, which Europe moved well beyond during the Middle Ages.
I'm just saying, given the sword's very short length and light weight, it could easily be dual wielded effectively.
Historically, though, that wasn't a thing. If you're standing shoulder-to-shoulder with a few thousand other soldiers, the most you're doing in a fight is holding a shield forward in one hand and stabbing wildly with the other. There just isn't room for the Hollywood-esque single combat with showy combat styles, even amongst the ancients.

Basically the Japanese never progressed beyond pattern welding, which Europe moved well beyond during the Middle Ages.
the katana wasn't THAT brittle, the japanese swordsmiths learned that you want part of the sword brittle (the back) while you want other parts flexible, they were the only ones to use selective hardening of steel to improve their swords, you're right though, the katana wasn't ment to fight armored targets though since only super elite had enough wealth to buy enough iron for their armor which wasn't even plate armor like europe. european designs tended to be big so you could use them as a can opener since your average soldier had some form of armor being leather, mail, or in the case of knights, plate, which needed a lot of leverage. this is kinda why the pike developed in europe so you could just give the foot soldiers something to punch through most armor before the gun arrived.
Look at this lovely pair of Chinese Dao swords!
