the katana wasn't THAT brittle, the japanese swordsmiths learned that you want part of the sword brittle (the back) while you want other parts flexible
Right, that's called pattern welding. You combine distinct portions of different types of steel, typically one with hardness to form an edge and one with flexibility to form a core, and then forge them together. This is what produces what's today known as Damascus steel, and was a principle method of forging in the Middle East during the early Middle Ages, and spread all across Europe. Everybody did it, it's not an amazing technique that only the Japanese could master. Pattern-welded swords have been found in remnants of Viking raids, for example. However, that's not how modern swords are designed. I keep seeing these videos about how amazing the katana is, and then there's the tripe like on Deadliest Warrior, where they use modern reproductions of these swords using modern manufacturing techniques. They're not constrained to using iron full of impurities, where pattern welding is literally the only way to make it usable for a weapon, and instead can use steel with both flexibility and durability. Point is, the katana was, as a design, nothing more than an attempt to make do with what they had, and a lot of the mystique surrounding the design is basically a mix of weeaboo fantasy and Japanese perception of their own cultural superiority.
The big question is, why do weebs and the Japanese romanticize and talk up the katana like mad, when they have the fuckin' kanabo already. The kanabo doesn't need no legends to be awesome, it's a fuckin' greatmace!
I recall there was a supposedly giant knight who could bend a penny between his finger and thumb, and he had a big ol' fuck-off giant sword. Google comes back with shit but I remember he was posted in here once or twice.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pier_Gerlofs_Donia
This is a shield with a built-in matchlock pistol. Pack the thread up, boys, we're done. Coolest weapon found, our quest is at it's end.
Why? Why would you ever want two identical weapons? Got any source on this ever being used? I haven't heard any actual, real accounts of dual-wielding outside of parrying daggers and the likes.
*drops mic*
John Woo movies are hyper-realistic.
Sort of reminds me of these two
Random annecdote, as a child I once wrote a story for school about a droidika that had been reprogrammed to be a friendly bartender. I know we're all sharing our favourite peices of sharp pointy steel, but my FAL passion is unabated, and this video makes me strangley moist. Besides, its technically a long slightly less pointy bit of steel isn't it?

The bayonet on that Fal looks like it would snap in half if you stabbed an orange and attempted to pull it out
Look at this lovely pair of Chinese Dao swords! Oh. [editline]23rd April 2014[/editline] It does, however, remind me of this quite rad mobile pillbox that I saw a while ago. It had one big wheel with spikes on the side, and a smaller one on the other side, and it was towed. You'd pull it into position, flip it onto it's big wheel, and BAM, you have a teeny little bunker that can rotate to cover more ground.
Now, okay, people like Riller or hwatever try and think this up. Could a P-90 styled firearm, chambered in, say, 10mm Auto, with the top-loading magazine with 45 rounds. Would that be ideal for a Secret Service/CIA/SWAT format, or is it too much/too little.
I have anti-material gun fetish
if we're gonna be gun nerds, then might as well it's "Anti-Materiel", not "Anti-Material", as "Materiel" is french for military tech or something
