I meant that I could not get it off of the barrel after I had removed the wood. Forcing it did not work and it did not slip over the front sight like the larger ring did. And I could not get the front sight to move with a punch. Maybe I didnt hit hard enough but I did not want to damage it.
There is no real way to damage it if you do it properly, but whatever, your rifle.

Jesus must have hated how his father designed shoulders then, because those paratrooper mainspring assemblies make sure you feel plenty of recoil.
Better start hitting the gym then :v

Posting here since there's sadly no history thread. Check out the modern American arsenal (of 1920).
The way that guy is holding his pistol looks so goofy for some reason.

They had really weird ideas about handguns back them. It wasn't until the 60s or something that the idea or holding handguns with two hands was thought to be a good idea

Are you telling me that there's a single person in that photo that doesn't look goofy?

Even the tank's derping, look at that exposed drivetrain.
EDIT: Hang on...wait a second....why does the guy on the lower far left - look like he's holding a mirrored Swiss K31...

pretty sure he's carrying an M1903 Springfield
Hopefully you guys can help me, but I remember seeing an old history channel doc, about rifles ( I think it was modern marvels) and it shows this instructor holding a BAR rifle. Like this:

Except it was weirder. He was holding it even lower, at the hip/waistline. And he was shooting from some odd squatting position. Anyone know anything about it?

Thats what I would have thought - whats with the weird toggle at the rear of the receiver though.

The FAL Para recoil management system is pretty similar to a Dragunov, and that thing kicks like a mule.

It's a position used in 'Walking Fire', a tactic that uses automatic rifles or SMG's to suppress the enemy while you slowly advance across open ground.

Was this weird idea just in the military or the police?

Everywhere.
It's a Handgun, not a Handsgun.
Arguing terminology? Then what about football?

The idea of side-towards-enemy and arm straight out is to minimize your size for the enemy and to have a natural line going from your right eye down your shoulder and along your arm.
Also, that 1940's instructor called the gun a 'piece'. Gangster as shit.

I'm kinda surprised by the reactions of some people in this thread because if anything, shooting a pistol with two hands is the weird technique. If you're trying to fire from behind cover, or panic-firing at close range, two hands is not going to happen. That's also leaving aside the possibility of injury or otherwise not having the other hand available.
Do read that article if you have the time, I think you'd find it an interesting read.

And the man to popularize modern combat handgun techniques was this guy, Jeff Cooper:

(also kinda racist but that's not the point)
And, through the magic of Six Degrees Of Whatever Ciaster Wants To Sperg About, that
Leads us to

The Bren Ten. Designed in 1983, only about 1,500 were made; and yet it's managed to secure itself a place in the mind of everyone who grew up watching 80s TV.
Also, a guy on the SA forums just got one.
The Bren Ten, despite its iconicness, turned out to be a failure. To put it bluntly, while the design is well thought out and innovative, the realisation is... less than ideal. (You can read more if you click ^that link.) Luckily for the enthusiasts of the 10mm calibre, other pistols chambered in it followed.
First was the Colt Delta Elite, which is simply a (strengthened, since 10mm has mad pressures yo) copy of the 1911 chambered in the new cartridge.

It's still around, and still being made, too! So if you're just looking for a 1911 with more punch, well, you know where to go. Alternatively
You could get a Kimber Eclipse! It's, well, also a 1911 chambered in 10mm. Doesn't even have a double stack mag. Boo.

Sure does look pretty, though.
Now, are you willing to go in a somewhat more exotic direction? Turn to the Italians, who made the Tanfoglio T95! (much like the Bren Ten, it's based on a modified CZ75 design 'cause commies can't patent stuff and thus some people consider it the Bren's successor)

Kinda reminds me of the Baby Eagle. It's also pretty popular in European countries as a competition pistol (shit, I might get one myself)
But if it's a combat weapon you're looking for, in 2014 you'd be foolish to choose a 1911 clone if you can get
A GLOCK.

Glock 20, to be precise. It's so good, the Danish (hello, Riller) Siriuspatruljen carry it. To shoot polar bears. While patrolling Greenland. Because 9mm turned out to be too weak. I have no idea why the fuck you'd want to patrol Greenland, but they do, and they carry Glocks with 'em. (also, M1917 Enfields since other rifles tend to freeze in the conditions they patrol in.)
So, there you have it. Powerful enough to kill polar bears, shatter the baby wrists of FBI agents, and crack 1911 frames, the 10mm is probably the most powerful pistol cartridge you can get while remaining actually useful. (yes, I'm looking at you, .50 Awkward Ego)
Maybe... you won't even twitch.

The most accurate technique is the Ukranian Bandit technique. You hold your pistol in your right hand, arm slightly bent, at about a foot - foot and a half away from your body. Your left hand hovers a foot ahead of the barrel, in a cupping grip on the air, creating a 'tunnel' between your fingers for which the bullet needs to pass through. It assures pinpoint accuracy, since you're too scared shitless of shooting your fingers off to ever miss.
