I thought so as well, but if you watch the Terminator Salvation trailer, you'll see a terminator fire a 40mm grenade launcher strapped to its arm with a hose attached to the back of it, and it recoils as if it were a cannon. Artistic license fail.

I kinda sorta get it on handguards of sniper rifles; to make your gun look less like a gun. But-.. That one you posted there... Cloth wrapping on the stock? Why? And even worse, [I]on the bare steel of the barrel?[/I] Why, I can't see how this could POSSIBLY go wrong!

I've seen full rifle wraps before, but that looks like too much on the stock; would've made more sense if there was a little wrap and a cheek riser. It could be the camo tape wrap as well.

Triangle folder wrapping makes sense, though. It's not the most comfortable stock, and it allows you to keep your bandage kit out and ready at all times. Wrapping your actual barrel directly, however, seems like an easy way to make your gun catch fire within just a few mags.
maybe since that's a picture on a ship they did that to keep the salt spray off, but it doesn't seem to be practical in just about every other situation
