Unless it's chambered in a pistol round it's not an SMG. That magazine still looks like it's made for a rifle round.

Can anybody explain why one has to lock back the charging handle on an MP5, or G3, then slap it forward again, in comparison to, say, just racking the bolt on an AK? I don't know much about guns, but it's always made me wonder.
I think it makes removing the magazine easier.

I don't know anything about firearms, but:
I think that the bolt locks open when your magazine is empty, then you change your mag and slap the handle to chamber the first round

I don't think so, I think it's locking the handle back that opens the bolt.
Locking the handle back is optional. Pulling the handle back pulls back the bolt, locking it allows for the gun to be ready to fire faster, as the HK slap takes less time than pulling the charging handle back and letting it go forward.

Like I said before: it's a Thompson M1a1 in a clamshell casing with gutter-sights, an ammo counter, and an underslung SPAS-12 (alright, technically an R870 with a SPAS heatshield, but close enough). You can tell a fictional weapon is badass when even the mockup prop is cool.
