I replied to someone who said they were surprised that 9mm was so powerful because it isn't shown to be powerful in video games. I just tried to explain why video games show 9mm to be weak, and illustrate that 9mm in reality is actually still very powerful. To him, this isn't a "no fucking shit" conclusion. This may come as a shock to some of you, but not everyone knows everything about the ballistic capabilities of every round. The guy I was responding to obviously was somewhat new to firearms knowledge, so I just gave him some basic insight to how powerful 9mm actually is.

Meanwhile you guys have to come in and sarcastically exhibit your full unyielding firearms expertise by putting down my explanation to a beginner. What may be obvious to you isn't necessarily the same story for everyone else.

But yeah, comparing a well known small round to a well known rifle round really makes me sound like I'm trying to be a super tactical 'murrican and not someone trying to relate the lethality of two common rounds in order to better further his understanding that smaller rounds can be just as lethal as larger ones. I should have said "well no shit the 9mm is powerful", that would help him understand.

The best response from you would be no response, since obviously none of what I posted was directed at you. A teacher could explain what rocks on the moon look like and an astronaut could come in and say "OI NO FUCKIN SHIT M8", that doesn't help the student understand anything, all it does is make astronauts look like cunts.

There's a video talking about how hiding behind a car in a gunfight is the worst "cover" but makes good "concealment". The 9x19 was poking through and through and was considered lethal all the way to the other side and onwards.

They are discounting the fact that there are seats and other objects in the doors that can stop bullets. Your best bet is to hide behind the wheels or engine.
Hollowpoints don't often react well when going through auto glass; I did read about a citizen who shot a carjacker in his car through the windshield at close range and it failed to penetrate his skull. The carjacker realized he'd been shot however and surrendered.
Not that you should be counting on your windshield to stop bullets of course.

i get why people would think car doors are armored but having taken one apart before, there's really nothing in there to stop a bullet except the window which might be up, a few little bits for the window motor and the door lock mechanism, most of the space is hollow

I heard from the fa/tg/uys that if the laser was actually making the recoil on the flashlights, it'd actually be some real fucking powerful recoil. one said it would level a city block, but I really doubt that

I'm pretty sure it'd be the sheer power. The lasguns are only shitty because the IG care more about firepower over effectiveness. If the lasguns are set to their highest, they'd only have around three shots before needing to recharge, so they set it on it's lowest so they can just shoot and shoot more than their enemy.

It's mostly rule of cool tbh, there's no reason for them to have recoil. That said, lasguns are highly inconsistent - they're shown as anything from glorified flashlights to actually pretty decent depending on where you look, glorious Imperial archives, or the ravings of a chaotic horde. They are generally put as capable of ripping off an arm or something, though. We can't even settle on the fucking colour - Dan Abnett says Imperial are blue, Chaos red (dunno why, Tzeench wants variety?), most of the video games show it all as red, and every author changes. To be honest, if we take Dawn of Wars lasguns, the burst is like half a second long, the amount of power supplied to thing thing would be gargantuan, and the amount of heat produced would probably be too. Being 40k, the power packs can be charged in a variety of ways - such as sunlight, I'm not even joking.

newton's 2nd and 3rd laws im just guessing, photons have momentum, so accelerating them would push you backwards (very small amount for real lasers, probably a lot for massive fuck-you future lasers) and the gas infront of the gun would probably expand quite a bit as its super-heated
