It's a scan from a book, the stock is near the spine of the book so the page curves upwards.

A friend and I did the math a while back for that 'pirate gun' firing M576 buckshot. The shell fires 27 pellets of 00 buck projectiles, at a muzzle velocity of 269m/s. A standard 12ga shotgun firing 9 pellets of 00 buck usually has a muzzle velocity of around 1300fps, which is 396m/s.

The comparative recoil impulse of the M576 compared to a shotgun then is (27 * 269)/(9 * 396), which comes to a factor of 2.03. So in actual recoil impulse, the M576 has double the recoil.

So firing a buckshot shell out of that little 'pirate gun' would be like firing both barrels simultaneously from a cut-down, sawn-off 12ga shotgun. I would not want to be the guy who has to do that on a regular basis. I don't know either way, but if I were to hazard a guess, it would be that they use standard HE rounds through that thing. With just a 75m/s muzzle velocity, the rounds have so little kinetic energy that they have less recoil than just one shell from our aforementioned 12ga shotgun.
