Goddammit, Smith & Wesson, where's the trigger on this thing?

How about my pump-action pistol calibre carbine that takes Glock mags? With Glock subcompact mags it would be pretty low profile
I've actually started designing it. Got about half the bolt done plus the barrel extension. I'll upload some pictures after work

I'm sorry but that's badass as fuck
Christ the ELC was such a silly design. Could those variants even rotate it's turret fully?
This tank actually looks kinda cool in a weird retrofuturistic way, though I'm pretty sure that if you hit it in this exposed gap, it'd be totally dickered.
Anyway, 1911th post calls for...
Probably the most prominent design created by good ol' Johnny Moses Browning, alongside the Hi-Power, the BAR, and the series of pistols he designed for FN:

The Colt 1911! Born in an era when choosing a handgun meant choosing between a misshapen excuse for a pistol and a revolver, the 1911 features a rugged, no-nonsense, heavy design, making it easy to club a motherfucker in the face after you ran out of ammo (fairly easy to do when you've only got 7 rounds) and letting it stay in military service 'till 1985 after some minor tweaks. I repeat - it was in use from the era when cavalry was actually A Thing, all the way to the era of bulletproof vests, tactical gear and early standardized rail systems. Let that sink in for a while.
The 1911 is, obviously, a sort of an antiquated design nowadays, but it still holds its own. It's hampered by its weight (a lil' over a kilogram of rugged handgun) and small mag capacity (7 .45s ain't a lot, and the version with a bigger magwell is pretty unwieldy for people with smaller hands), but it definitely can kill someone dead without a problem. It's accurate and pretty ergonomic (except for the grip safety. Goddamn grip safety.), too, and the .45 ACP bullet gives it a lot of bite.
And it just looks so cool. Seriously, look at it!

There's a whole slew of variants, from the Colt Government:

Through the funny looking compact ones:

And the 1991A1, which is probably my favorite modern 1911:

And the modern Kimbers (not too shabby, either, what's up with that mag plate though?)

So, yeah. 1911s. They own. Honestly though, if I were to choose a gun for self defense, I would've gone with something more modern instead. Like, I dunno, a newer generation Glock. Or a Sig Sauer. Or, if I was hell bent on using .45, an FN FNP. The 1911's a good design, but, while definitely a viable option, is easily bested by the more modern handguns - sure, you can try to modernize your ol' Colt, but why keep desperatedly adding rails and putting a more or less obsolete mechanism into a new shell?
I still want one, though.

It would be boned anywhere you shot it. It was meant to be an infantry support vehicle (not an IFV that could carry troops) that could be air dropped anywhere. The final version, which never made it into production, had a turret that couldn't be fully rotated

It's armor was only meant to be thick enough to stop small arms fire and maybe some low penetration anti tank rifles. Of course this was full retard and the tank thankfully never saw production.
1911s are overrated.

The thing on the bottom of the mag on kimbers is so you don't end up pinching your hand or something when you put the mag in quick for sport shooting or something, also makes it easier to hold when reloading too.
Also I wouldn't call rails modernizing, since most things you can put on them are fairly useless to 90% of people.
Outdated? yes
Overrated? nope
The 1911 has aged incredibly well, probably better than any other gun in history, the closest gun in ageing well to the 1911 would the M2 Browning machine gun.
[sub][sub]and outdated[/sub][/sub]
I didn't say they weren't, I'm perfectly aware they are. Still love 'em.

Goddammit did you really have to quote the whole thing
Also, rails are totally modernizing. You had an old gun you couldn't mount tactical gear on (I'm talking actual useful tactical gear, not $50 laser pointers from Walmart), then bang, you add rails, stir, and you've got something that's more adaptable and flexible.

No, not really, having rails is a step to modernization but rails alone do not make something modern. Modernizing a 1911 would be making it double stack, removing that grip safety, making it DA/SA or even striker fired if you dared, and chambering it in a more efficient round than .45.
Heres another example

This is just your Generic AKM with a generic rail system. Just because it has a modern rail system with a modern reflex sight and a flash light doesn't make it modernized. It still uses a (debatelby) out dated round and has issues with it's ergonomics.

Heres an actual modernized variant. This is the AK-107. It's chambered in a more modern and widely available round that debatably performs better. What makes it modern isn't just it's rail system but it's internals as well

[sub](a cookie to anyone who can tell me whats wrong with this .gif)[/sub]
It's got a system that more or less negates the recoil from firing.
It also got rid of that awful lever safety and replaced it with a push button one.
Yeah, I know, I didn't say rails alone make your 1911 into a modern beast of a pistol, but they're definitely a part of making a gun more useful. It's a part of the whole gun dress-up thing I mentioned at the end of the 1911 post - you can stuff your old internals in SPESS AGE POLYMER frames with rails, and it does make them a bit more relevant, but it's like trying to make an old car run better by installing a new racing wheel or whatever.
Think it's funny when people go "oh M1911 outdated!!!!!!" every goddamn time one is posted, but will gladly praise something like the Sten or MP18.

Last I checked, the Sten and MP18 aren't in mass production or military use anywhere anymore.
Some of the various Para-Ordnance 1911s pretty much do everything but remove that grip saftety.
They have multiple calibers, double-action, double stack magazines.
Though the guns might not be very good, I don't know.

No. There's only one way to modernize the 1911, and that is to change the name to the 2011 and make it look like this:

1911:
Single action? Single stack single feed magazine? Dumb, awkward safety that LOCKS THE SLIDE? Horrible to disassemble?
Nope.
Stock M2:
Heavy as dicks? Completely useless barrel change function? Very difficult to headspace and time correctly in the field if you haven't got the correct tools? Useless if not mounted on a car with a frame specifically meant to support its ridiculous recoil?
Nope.

People always bring up those points when talking about 1911s, and the thing about them that I don't understand is that every one of those things has been done. Yet people still act like they're unheard of.
