Coolest/Ugliest Weapons V5 - Bullpup AKs are the best

There's some .22s that can be converted between bolt and semi, .22LR is so weak they're basically straight blowbacks that have rotating charging handles to serve as locking lugs. In terms of larger rifles it was experimented with on a lot of early semi-autos, for a while one of the early Mauser Selbstlader designs had a similar cutoff, the charging handle rotated in/out of a locking catch, when it was upward it operated on long recoil, when down it was bolt action. Memory serving for a while even the M1 Garand had a cut-off switch that turned it into a straight pull.
Actually one of those .22s is up for this Rock Island Auction too:

And of course most guns with rifle grenade cutoffs can technically be made bolt action as well, that's just not the intended function of the cut off.
That's a cool gun, know of any more that are both bolt and semi auto?
Gewehr 43 can do it IIRC

the walther model 2 (or model 1 maybe? idk) rifle is another neat semiauto/bolt action .22. it functions the same way as the sedgely rifle in that video iirc

A look at the Walther model 1 rifle, pretty much the same operation.
God I fucking want those rifles. Something about semi-auto and bolt action combinations just speaks literal books of usefulness.

*whole lotta homemade guns*
I've always wondered: are the barrels of these guns rifled? I feel like that's one of the most difficult things to get right with a homemade gun, besides the fit and finish of parts overall.
Some are, some are not. Every "homebuilt" firearm tends to have a variety of things and parts that are just sorta put together and made to work. Rifling a barrel requires a bit of knowledge regarding drilling techniques, but most of the people who tend to make these firearms already have access to the lathe tools required for such a process. The other method is simply just purchasing a drill bit on the open market that is specifically made for drilling gun barrels, but can easily be covered up by saying that you use it for a different process.
Either way though, all firearms that are homemade are completely different from neighborhood to neighborhood. That's why I take so much interest in the underground firearm market. Not only does it lead to creativity, but it is honestly just amazing to watch the master design for a firearm be modified and branched out for different uses by different gangs/groups.
Perfect example of this is the Borz machine pistol:
[t]https://homemadeguns.files.wordpress.com/2014/10/chechensmgs-improguns.jpg[/t]
All of these guns were manufactured based on the same schematics... The only difference is that each firearm is manufactured by a different gunsmith, and all though one gunsmith may manufacture XYZ machine pistol, some other gunsmith down the road will manufacture XZY machine pistol. All though they are based on the same X model, they are different based on a few key differences.

I actually really fucking love this chunky gat style, makes me think of Robocop
What's annoying to me is that they clearly went all out on this thing, but then they just completely ignored the magazine release and the safety lever, going all out overdone is one thing, but mixing overdone with underdone (and a few parts like the RCS which are quite good) is weird.
The RCS also makes the standard selector even more annoying since that charging handle allows you to lock the bolt to the rear, but with a standard safety it can't be engaged with the bolt in the rearward position.

On today's episode of Only In Russia:
The Imperial Russian Battleship Novgorod.
Designed by Russian madman Andrey Alexandrovich Popov, and somehow approved by Tsar Alexander II, this spectacular failure of a ship is one of the most unusual vessels ever to be put into active military service.

Look odd to you? Well that's because Popov, in some vodka fueled fever dream I'm sure, decided that the best shape for a big battleship was a circle.

The idea was actually a reasonable one: You can fit far larger guns on a ship of the same displacement than a traditional design. As such, the Novgorod, launched in 1874, carried impressive armament: two 11-inch muzzle loading rifles. Unfortunately there was the small problem of the ship being completely uncontrollable.

It had no keel or long hull to keep her straight in the water, so she was only barely seaworthy. The guns were designed to be aimed and fired independently, which meant every single shot imparted centripetal force on the ship, which made the entire craft spin like a saucer every time a gun was fired.

This shot shows what the lower hull looks like. There really was no way to make it stable.

Despite the dismal failure of both round battleships, Tsar Alexander II ordered a royal yacht, the Livadia, to be constructed on the same principles, because Popov had convinced him with some modifications the design could be made to ride waves smoother than a conventional hull, and the Empress was prone to seasickness.

The Yacht basically looks like a normal ship sat on a whoopee cushion.

While the interior was gorgeously appointed, the ship proved unstable enough that even hardened semen reported being seasick. The Empress had to leave the ship right after it had left on his maiden voyage. It barely completed its big show tour then was scrapped as soon as possible for being shit.

I like the look of it, but what about the design makes it so unstable? I'm not big on seafaring vessel engineering.
I like the look of it, but what about the design makes it so unstable? I'm not big on seafaring vessel engineering.
Simply put, to go in a straight line, the ship needs to have a keel, a big flat vertical plane along the bottom of the ship. A long skinny hull also helps with the whole going straight thing. A keel and long hull is also vital in absorbing the recoil of the extremely powerful guns mounted on warships.

As far as I can tell, no. He seems to have just dropped off the map shortly after the Russian revolution in the late 1800's.

Hey Aussie friends... Quick question regarding some "gun control activist" in the land down under, named Mark McPherson. Is this guy just blinded by his cause or mentally retarded?
"It's just incredible to think somebody could build one of these in their backyard," Mr McPherson said.
"Where did they end up? In the hands of criminals and drug dealers.
"That's why we've just got to keep doing what we're doing and keep fighting hard."
I mean I get the guy lost his kid, but when it's clear that submachine guns are now being built by talented individuals, doesn't that mean the current legislation is failing..?
Also the firearms he was talking about:
[t]https://s.yimg.com/ea/img/-/141024/oct24_machine_guns_1280_1a4jgeh-1a4jgm1.jpg?x=292&sig=2mH2jLbTASeUnFB3U1v0Dw--[/t] [t]https://s.yimg.com/dh/ap/default/141023/oct24-gun-sentence_638.jpg[/t] [t]http://resources3.news.com.au/images/2014/09/23/1227067/953251-2632eb50-422f-11e4-aebd-241de91fbb64.jpg[/t]
The guy who made these is a man by the name of Leon Baird, and every fucking news article I have seen on the guy has said that McPherson believes that your guys gun legislation should become more strict, even though these firearms are irrelevant to the current legislation!
Don't underestimate Australia
Those SMGs aren't evidence that the law is ineffective. Quite the contrary, it shows just how well the law is working. When your legislation is so tight and effective criminals start home-brewing actual, factory-grade well-made weapons, you law truly works and serves it purpose.
And shows it's flaws. The amount of guns in the wrong hands don't go down by it. The guns in the wrong hands just turn more dangerous (concealable full-autos) and harder to track back to a source to crack down on(unnumbered workshop pieces). You don't even need to make the 'less guns in the right hands' argument, since that one's subjective and kinda flawed (no guns in any hands is the optimal, from a safety standpoint), but when you're puttin' factory-grade automatics in the wrong hands, your law's truly doing it's job.
Either way, it's a tragedy that these men and women are finding their talents in gunsmithing by making illegal firearms, and are now bound to be locked away, and never be able to be put to work by the Australian army to produce domestic firearms which are built in such a way where they are affordable, and can literally be produced in a shed with a pair of power tools.
It is also another tragedy that no one has said, "You know what? These pieces of art and ingenuity should be put into museums!" and instead they'll meet a smelter or evidence locker. I mean seriously, I would love to see police departments across the world donate firearms which are dated, coded with the areas they are taken from, and creators affiliations detailed so that someone could make a museum where you can literally say, "This is where this design started, and these are it's branch off's and child variants!"
By the way... Those firearms are not open bolts from what I can see:
[t]http://resources3.news.com.au/images/2014/09/23/1227067/953251-2632eb50-422f-11e4-aebd-241de91fbb64.jpg[/t]
They actually have built in firearm safeties, and are most likely a different reloading mechanism, which if this was to be the case would prove that the designers of these firearms are starting to stray away from the open bolt design, and we'll eventually see a shift to intermediate cartridge battle rifles.
Um, what proof do you have that they're not open bolt? It looks like a simple blowback mechanism to me and there doesn't look like there is space for a hammer mechanism.
It tends to be a pain in the ass to have open bolts with firearm safeties, and even if it was still an open bolt design, the inclusion of a firearm safety speaks tons for how experinced the gunsmiths are getting. Are there any videos of people firing these? I genuinely want to know what happens when you do fire one.
It's not difficult to have a trigger block.
The more well-made ones probably just shoot. And some of the shittier ones probably blow up.
Nothing that you wouldn't expect, really.
