The angle would have to be a perfect 180 degrees though.
add Newton's third law to any major sci-fi battlecruiser that fires full broadsides of projectile weapons, hilarity ensues
You'd think they would have vector thrusters that hold the ship in place/counteract it.
Can anyone identify these weapons?
Looks like generic AR's with funny optics
Some type of HK416?
Two HK416s, and some sort of MP5. [editline]7th June 2013[/editline] Also the HKs both have Leupold CQT scopes on them.
One guy had a G36K, looks like the PD there was set up with the "Because you suck and we hate you" company, what with all the 416s and G36s... fucking H&K... [editline]21:19[/editline] Yep, remembered right, it's called Charlton Automatic Rifle I remember bumping into it on wiki when looking at Lee-Enfield stuff.
Consider what would happen in space since theres no gravity. If you shot a rifle in space, what happens when the recoil hits your shoulder?
Not a whole lot, if you run the numbers. A 9x19mm round has a momentum of only 2.9kgm/s. In terms of pure recoil, an astronaut could dump an entire Glock magazine of 17 rounds (for example) and wind up with a net propulsion of just 0.5m/s, if his combined body+suit+gear mass is 100kg. If the astronaut is floating unsupported, he could fire the round downwards (think Ender's Game) to minimize the rotational impulse to basically nothing. If he's supported, then the recoil doesn't matter. The main problem with firearms in space isn't recoil, it's thermal sensitivity. Metal and lubricant going from just above absolute zero in the dark to several hundred degrees in direct sunlight don't like to play nicely. Alternative systems like the Gyrojet were designed because they're mechanically extremely simple.
'not a whole lot' can turn into a very big problem when you've got nothing to stop you
If an astronaut isn't anchored to anything and doesn't have any kind of attitude control system, meaning he's just floating in space, his chances of being able to face the target let alone aim at it and fire a round are low in the first place. In general if an astronaut needs to get anything done outside the station or rocket, he either stays anchored to the surface or he brings along an MMU.
Why? When a depressurization is a mission kill at the very least, why bother with a large cartridge?
If they only need to depressurize them, why don't they just use darts? Seems simple enough.
Why? When a depressurization is a mission kill at the very least, why bother with a large cartridge?
Because in space combat, penetration would be key; you shoot through Ivan's suit and pop, he's dead. Considering that most 9mm's can get easily stopped by modern bullet resistant vests and plates, I'd assume that combat-cosmonauts would be at the very least wearing some kevlar.

Anyways, this is starting to get off-topic, but I think the disadvantage of recoil in space is a little overstated. The Soviets installed guns on satellites for years, the problem wasn't recoil but rather mechanical reliability as I mentioned earlier. What you really need is a SPACE SHOTGUN (an extraordinarily ugly space shotgun)
I like the way the HS-10 looks, now if only it worked.
It would work if a benelli m4 was put in there instead of the Rem 1100

I saw it in an episode of Miami Vice and was wondering what it was. Looks like something a plumber with a lot of spare cut up pipes put together.
