The plus side of a laser is that its always non-lethal, while a bullet may be lethal or may not be. Also i don't know much about lasers used for breaking UN laws, but most lasers will only cause temporary eye damage.

When the UH-60 was going through trials or it's early competition, it was flying over a forest when a small part in the engine basically stopped it sending power to the rotors, so it fell out of the sky. Because of how tough the bird was, the rotors smacked the trees out of the way and the crew landed safely with little to no damage to the helo. They quickly identified the problem, repaired it, and finished the trials. The V-22 has had 7 crashes with 36 deaths in those crashes. Only 1 of those crashes was in a combat zone, and it wasn't due to enemy fire.
