I looked back a lot of pages and noticed there is no official thread (at least not recent) that is dedicated to my favorite band of all time. In here I will summarize the band from beginning to end, analyze each member and give those who haven't gotten the chance to listen to these gods the reason why they should listen, and how, because it isn't just finding a random Floyd song and press play. -=HISTORY=- Pink Floyd was founded officially in 1965 and compromised of 4 members, Syd Barrett, Richard Wright, Nick Mason and Roger Waters. Before that, Waters and Mason had been performing together under a variety of band names, but after Barrett and Wright joined, they were called Pink Floyd. They released their first single, Arnold Layne in 1967, and their debut album Piper at the gates of Dawn later that year. Lead guitarist David Gilmour joined the band for the release of their second album, A Saucerful of Secrets. The album was an instant hit, but it was the last Floyd album to feature Syd Barrett. Barrett left the band in 1968. He became mentally ill and spent the rest of his life out in the country. Pink Floyd released loads of great albums, fx, Meddle, The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall and The Division Bell. Roger Waters however claimed ownership of the band when they made The Wall, and tensions rose when he wrote an entire album, The Final Cut, dedicated to his father, much to Gilmour's dismay. The Final Cut is considered by many to be Roger's first solo album. Roger left the band after the release of The Final Cut, and Gilmour assumed leadership of the band. Gilmour and Mason together made the album Momentary Lapse of Reason, the first album without Waters. Wright was not a part of the official lineup of the album. Before dissolving, Pink Floyd, comprised of Gilmour, Mason and Wright, recorded their final album, The Division Bell. However, in 2005, the four bandmembers reunited for one show. -=MEMBERS=- SYD BARRETT Lead singer and guitarist from 1965-1968 before being replaced by Gilmour due to differences in the band. After he left the band recorded many songs and albums about Barrett, including Wish You Were Here, The Wall (Pink's insanity is mirrored to Barrett's insanity), The Dark Side of the Moon, and many songs, most known is Shine On You Crazy Diamond from Wish You Were Here. Barrett mainly played Fender guitars. DAVID GILMOUR Gilmour replaced Barrett in 1968 and became lead guitarist and singer. He and Waters suffered differences with each other, and after Waters left the band in 1983, Gilmour wanted to write an album as an "in-your-face" to Waters. Gilmour favored Fender Stratocasters. NICK MASON Nick Mason was Pink Floyd's drummer from 1965-1994. RICHARD WRIGHT Richard Wright was Pink Floyd's keyboardist and backing vocalist. Roger Waters Roger was Pink Floyd's leader, bassist and primary songwriter for most of his tenure in the band. He left the band in 1983 after massive differences with Gilmour. FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T LISTENED TO FLOYD Never listened to Floyd have you? Well now would be a perfect time to start! If you're gonna listen to Floyd you kind of have to do it right. Some people are able to listen to song and song, but to catch the real essence and power of their songs, you have to listen to each individual album. Here's their albums in order; [img_thumb]http://www.progarchives.com/progressive_rock_discography_covers/364/cover_1929151082009.jpg[/img_thumb][img_thumb]http://www.robbierocks.ch/LP%20Cov%20SM/1968/01.saucerful%20of%20secrets.jpg[/img_thumb][img_thumb]http://therisingstorm.net/audio/more1.jpg[/img_thumb] [img_thumb]http://www.progarchives.com/progressive_rock_discography_covers/364/cover_1435151082009.jpg[/img_thumb][img_thumb]http://lipstickandpolitics.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/AtomHeartMotherCover1.jpg[/img_thumb][img_thumb]http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41Y1XQ2JBBL.jpg[/img_thumb] [img_thumb]http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000002UA2.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg[/img_thumb][img_thumb]http://www.classicrockmagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/TheDarkSideoftheMoon.jpg[/img_thumb][img_thumb]http://www.neptunepinkfloyd.co.uk/images/news/2009/20090419-Pink-Floyd-Suing-EMI-Royalties.jpg[/img_thumb] [img_thumb]http://diskoduck.cz/shop/images/pink_floyd-animals-frontal1.jpg[/img_thumb][img_thumb]http://aext.net/wp-contents/uploads/2010/08/pink-floyd-the-wall.jpg[/img_thumb][img_thumb]http://www.pinkfloyd.co.uk/theFinalCut/media/afc_TheFinalCut2004.jpg[/img_thumb][img_thumb]http://www.sydlexia.com/imagesandstuff/amlor/amlor.png[/img_thumb] [img_thumb]http://www.mp3boo.com/cover-album/pink-floyd-the-division-bell-54888.jpg[/img_thumb] Piper at the Gates of Dawn, A Saucerful of Secrets, More, Ummagumma, Atom Heart Mother, Meddle, Obscured By Clouds, The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall, The Final Cut, Momentary Lapse of Reason, The Division Bell VIDEO SECTION Sheep, from Animals. If you think any other songs/live performances should be in the videos section, let me know and I'll update.
I've always thought their earlier stuff with Syd was pretty underrated compared to the rest of the discography. I mean, have you heard the Gnome? It's hilarious!
I've always thought their earlier stuff with Syd was pretty underrated compared to the rest of the discography. I mean, have you heard the Gnome? It's hilarious!
And Bike too :v:
Well the ending really creeps me out but the rest is cool.
I've always thought their earlier stuff with Syd was pretty underrated compared to the rest of the discography.
Syd Barrett was the pioneer of Pink Floyd. Without which... there would be a missing place in music. He walked in on the band playing "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" while he was overweight and bald, that must be the most ironic thing to happen in music in the history of the world. :v:
I don't think Syd deserves credit at all for the Pink Floyd sound. I think he gets talked about too much. Anyway, there is too much Pink Floyd I like.
Back when progressive rock ruled the pop charts :allears:
What do Pink Floyd and Princess Diana have in common? [sp] Their last hit was The Wall[/sp]
What do Pink Floyd and Princess Diana have in common? [sp] Their last hit was The Wall[/sp]
Final Cut hit No.1 in the UK album charts. Joke ruined forever.
I don't get the hate on A Momentary Lapse Of Reason. Its kind of like Metallica's Load and Reload, since they're both very different from what the band usually makes, but still incredibly awesome.
Fantastic band. My favourites are Wish You Were Here, The Wall, Dark Side Of The Moon and Division Bell. And I'm going to see The Wall Live next year. :buddy: And in response to Hakita, that's the exact reason people didn't like Lapse, it was a little too different to what people considered "Normal" Floyd stuff. It's still a great album in its own right though.
Final Cut hit No.1 in the UK album charts. Joke ruined forever.
The last hit that was accepted by normal Floyd fans. The Final Cut was hated by die hard fans. Your ruin is now ruined forever.
The last hit that was accepted by normal Floyd fans. The Final Cut was hated by die hard fans. Your ruin is now ruined forever.
Whether it was liked by "die-hard fans or not" is irrelevant.
I don't think Syd deserves credit at all for the Pink Floyd sound. I think he gets talked about too much. Anyway, there is too much Pink Floyd I like.
Obviously, but he doesn't get enough discussion. Can't believe you are upset by us talking about his influence. What do want me to say? "Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Richard Wright and Nick Mason are awesome /thread" ?
On the topic of Syd... Obviously he can't be given credit for the spacey sounds most people associate with Floyd, like Dark Side and The Wall, but Piper is a great album and Syd's influence lasted for all of Pink Floyd's days, and it would be just as stupid to totally write him off. Syd's story really is a sad one. Anyway, anyone interested in one of the greatest bands ever should read A Saucerful of Secrets: The Pink Floyd Odyssey by Nicholas Schaffner. This post (reasonably) leaves out a loooot of Pink Floyd's history (no mention of "The Pink Floyd Sound" days, or just "The Pink Floyd"), but it's a really interesting history. Personally, Pink Floyd is my favorite band ever... but I feel like it would be kind of ridiculous to call them THE best band ever. I think Atom Heart Mother, Meddle, Obscured by Clouds and Floyd's part in the Zabriskie Point soundtrack get overlooked a lot. Not to say they're better than Animals, Dark Side, The Wall, Ummagumma or any of the hugely popular albums because I really can't choose, but... ah what the hell am I saying. It's all so good.
Momentary Lapse of Reason is bad but I love it.
Momentary Lapse of Reason is bad but I love it.
There is no such thing as a "Bad Pink Floyd Album", it's a fucking myth.
Obviously, but he doesn't get enough discussion. Can't believe you are upset by us talking about his influence. What do want me to say? "Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Richard Wright and Nick Mason are awesome /thread" ?
In my opinion he gets way too much discussion and he's usually the first person that gets brought up in most Pink Floyd discussions regardless if he is relevant to the conversation. It tends turns from a Pink Floyd discussion into a Syd discussion. I'm basically saying I don't like it when he becomes a fulcrum point for Pink Floyd discussions. I think I should just stop bringing up my opinion though because any talk about Pink Floyd is good talk.
There is no such thing as a "Bad Pink Floyd Album", it's a fucking myth.
Ok, that's just my opinion. :3:
Atom Heart Mother technically isn't great. But its superb in artistic terms. Debateable both ways. I still adore it as an album as it has grown and became superb in my eyes with repeat listens.
[img_thumb]http://www.progarchives.com/progressive_rock_discography_covers/364/cover_3531151082009.jpg[/img_thumb] Ok, that's just my opinion. :3:
I think that's the worst of their albums, but I still don't think it's bad.
I think that's the worst of their albums, but I still don't think it's bad.
I didn't like the structure, but it did have a couple of good songs, like Not Now John and The Post-War Dream. Am I wrong?
I didn't like the structure, but it did have a couple of good songs, like Not Now John and The Post-War Dream. Am I wrong?
I agree with you. The Final Cut has some good moments and some songs I like on their own, but the album as a whole is hard to get through in one sitting. I don't hate it like most people who love Floyd as much as I do hate it, but... it's my least favorite album of theirs as a whole.
[img_thumb]http://www.progarchives.com/progressive_rock_discography_covers/364/cover_3531151082009.jpg[/img_thumb] Ok, that's just my opinion. :3:
Opinions mean jack shit. The fact still stands.
Opinions mean jack shit. The fact still stands.
Obviously but think realistically :v: Would you say Wish You Were Here is better than Momentary Lapse of Reason, and why? [editline]12th December 2010[/editline] :smug:
Opinions mean jack shit. The fact still stands.
Uh... opinions do kind of mean something if you're talking about the quality of music. Even if it's unarguably technically superb, if no one likes it... there's probably a reason.
I personally think something like Momentary Lapse is underrated, its uplifting and fresh 80s sounding, pop-oriented. 80s Pink Floyd is underrated, there ya go.
Pink Floyd as a whole are pretty overrated IMO, in the style of The Beatles I mean they're great but not THAT great
Pink Floyd as a whole are pretty overrated IMO, in the style of The Beatles I mean they're great but not THAT great
Don't say it like that, fool!! It will be interpreted as hateful. But in reality, he speaks the truth. However fuck that, concept albums are there to create an image with glorious outcomes. If you can't withdraw that, then its hopeless to divulge into their music.
