I'm not solely talking about the music, mainly the vibe I get from it. But it's a confusing way of looking at it.
All of the well known Floyd albums are all very different sounding. They weren't afraid to go into a different musical direction. As much as I love Animals I don't think it would be a good first album because the songs are long. I love long songs, but a lot of people don't. I also found it harder to get into than the other albums. I'd recommend Dark Side of the Moon because it's a lot easier to fall in love with.
Incidentally the first Floyd album I listened to was The Wall
or listen to the wall blazed out of your mind (IN IT'S ENTIRITY MIND YOU!) you will never think ill of this band.
I just want my first taste of them to be when I'm high as shit and totally relaxed
or listen to the wall blazed out of your mind (IN IT'S ENTIRITY MIND YOU!) you will never think ill of this band.
I'm more likely to play Animals or Dark Side of The Moon than The Wall. I'm more likely to play the first 6 tracks off The Wall than the whole album :v: [editline]3rd February 2011[/editline]
I just want my first taste of them to be when I'm high as shit and totally relaxed
It's not that type of album, it is more "extravagent" than anything.
Well maybe I'll listen to the wall then I'll listen to either I guess but I'm not going to listen to any of it until I get some weed :v:

interesting Sounds legit
I kinda like to have my senses clear to listen to music. I never got the "You have to be high to like this band" mentality. It's kind of insulting to the group, implying you can't like it with a clear head.
I never got the "You have to be high to like this band" mentality.
You do have to have a certain mentality to fully appreciate some music. I'm not saying take drugs, but it's about mindset.
I always thought if you listened to an album in the same manner the artist created it you appreciate it more ...Maybe that's why I don't like Rubber Soul much
I always thought if you listened to an album in the same manner the artist created it you appreciate it more ...Maybe that's why I don't like Rubber Soul much
That's what I have to do all the time. I can't let myself irrationally dislike an album like that.
I never got the "You have to be high to like this band" mentality. It's kind of insulting to the group, implying you can't like it with a clear head.
It is never that you have to be to like the band, it's more that it is far better experiencing high. Although I rarely ever got it, being high increases a lot of people's musical appreciation and beyond that their concentration, so it is much easier for someone to enjoy good music. To go even further, being high often lifts a mental filter which allows the person to be more open to things they would normally reject. I do agree with your statement though, being high has nothing to do with determining the quality of music. In a lot of people it does have the ability to enhance the music. Someone could say that since being high can increase a person's openness that this could be a major factor in their determination of the music's quality but what their missing is so many other factors the biggest being generally open to liking what they usually would not. Eh, I could go further into this, but I won't. [editline]3rd February 2011[/editline]
I always thought if you listened to an album in the same manner the artist created it you appreciate it more
There is no logical reason to assume that.
Stop persuading people to take drugs :v:
Pink Floyd is a drug on it's own.
Pink Floyd is a drug on it's own.
The truth

Basically there is nothing anyone in this thread can do to prevent me from listening to them for first time high, it's going to happen. Besides, it'd be hypocritical, I mean, Pink Floyd. Not really straight edge dudes are they
Being high doesn't make you experience it in a superior way to others. If you personally feel that way, go for it. I don't get it, if you were disappointed and high you may react badly.
I never said it'd be a "superior" way to others. Somehow I doubt it, I haven't listened to anything high without enjoying it. Even if I do I'll go back to it afterwards, I don't see why people care if I'm sober or not
Your way of thinking changes when you are comprimized :smug:
Not exactly. When it comes to problem solving and cognition, yeah you're right. Artistically, and with the appreciation of art increases dramatically. You think much more about the lyrics, about the riffs, about the notes, the sustain. I don't know about anyone else but I over analyse everything when I'm "compromised" and I think more reflectively on everything, esp music. eg The stuff I improvise when I'm high is incredible, I don't know how I do it, I just wish I could remember it all.
A lot of people have different kinds of highs. Like I said earlier, music was never really better when I was high, it was pretty much the same. You must be someone who really gets an enhanced sense of sound when high.
Besides, it'd be hypocritical, I mean, Pink Floyd. Not really straight edge dudes are they
None of them really did drugs besides Syd. I'm of course omitting tobacco and alcohol. Someone said somewhere that Mason almost got kicked out for doing cocaine, but I don't know if that is legitimate because I've only seen it on some forum posted by some random person.

I finally listened to Animals for the first time today, and I have to say it's pretty fucking awesome. What have I been doing with my life to miss an album like this?

I thought everyone had the same thing.
None of them really did drugs besides Syd. I'm of course omitting tobacco and alcohol. Wow I had a misconception there, but it only drinking and smoking cigs doesn't really go with the psych rock scene does it? I thought it was all about transcending mortality and stuff like that, how can you do that without using drugs?

Took me a few tries to really get into Animals, but it was certainly worth it.
I always thought the first half of Animals dragged a bit, but Pigs and Sheep are awesome
