I can't believe people hate Aku no Hana so much for it's animation.
What about Higurashi then? It's animation was so terrible at times, i wanted to close my eyes, but then i would miss subs and thus miss part of a great story.

Also finished second episode of Aku no Hana. Just like I got over the poor animation when I watched Higurashi, I'm getting used to it in Aku no Hana.
Overall I really like it so far. For once something a bit different.

there's way too many stills and it is really distracting to see the characters in focus moving around and all the characters in the background with a stupid look on their face or sitting in some awkward position for the entire scene
stills CAN be useful from a direction standpoint but it's pretty clear that they just don't have the budget to be animating all the characters moving all the time

It looks good, it's a style that absolutely fits the show. Shadows would ruin it, not putting emphasis on the expressions would ruin it, having anime cutesy kawaii would ruin it.

For rotoscoping the animation is a-ok, they are making it as an anime, not as a live-action show, so constantly animating every character at all times wouldn't make sense and wouldn't put focus in the right place.
If it was fully animated at all times half of the point of making it rotoscoped would be ruined, it could just as well been a live action show then.

That's one of the worst arguments I've ever heard for [i]bad[/i] rotoscoping. Look at what Cowboy Bebop did in some places, it worked wonderfully, but this show so far has done it horribly. You [i]can[/i] have everybody moving and there's a reason for it, rotoscoping without proper movement turns it into the uncanny valley.

Anime don't animate background characters 99% of the time simply for budgetary reasons. It costs a lot of money to animate that much, and anime are so budget constrained already.
Also they don't need to not animate people just to show focus, that can be easily achieved by several other methods. How do you think live action shows show what the focus is supposed to be?
The deal with rotoscoping is it makes everyone look really lively, even when the characters aren't doing anything they still move a bit as a result the frames getting redrawn and natural human wobbling, but when you start showing the exact same frame for an extended period of time it breaks the immersion.
