The character's name is Mikasa, [sp]which sounds like the Mi Casa in the famous phrase Mi casa es su casa (my home is your home)[/sp]
you are fairly dense
because everyone obviously heard about that famous phrase

But its just a pun
Kamikaze still should've understood it as it was just
a simple
pun
I'm sorry that I was raised in America where just about everyone has heard of and used the phrase. I just assumed that it was a more global saying.
i knew what you meant but the pun was bad tbh

I grew up with my white mom and didn't take Spanish in school (I learned from relatives on my dad's side schools teach mostly the formal stuff, apparently not useful in day-to-day conversations or something).
You know what I like about Gargantia? COLOURS. It's got loads of the stuff, not all these depressing grey tones and shit. It's a pleasant change from the norm.
Dgg Your points are very well laid out and I do agree with you, but I really can't stand Aku no Hana's artstyle, I get why it's like that but it doesn't change the fact that it makes the show unappealing to watch for me and clearly many others.
Doesn't help that I really don't care for the manga either.
Nothing wrong with disliking the style they went for in Aku no Hana, that's a preference thing. The director knows that it will be unappealing for many.
If they have the time and money, they will animate it in 99% of cases. Given the money, the same thing would probably happen for Aku no Hana.
And it wasn't only unimportant background characters getting that treatment.
[t]http://i.imgur.com/k2t4x7C.png[/t]
At 6:15 of episode 2, Nakamura stays like that for a solid ten seconds. Just sitting there with that dumb expression on her face for ten seconds while Kasuga is redrawn every single frame, and the only thing he does is bring is hand up to his face. It sticks out like a sore thumb.
I don't see a problem with that at all, I already told you, animating Nakamura there would not add anything to the scene, the important thing is seeing what Kasuga is doing and thinking, the background is there to set the setting, not to be looked at. This happens in anime absolutely all the time, the only reason you're reacting at it is because you're watching Aku no Hana more as a live-action show and less like an anime show. Your expectations are not on par with what you're watching, simply put you'er "watching it wrong".
[t]http://i.imgur.com/k2t4x7C.png[/t]
Why did they use depth of field when they are already emphasizing what the focal point is by animating the MC?
When did I ever say they couldn't and wouldn't use depth of field? I said they had different tools at their disposal, they can not-animate characters that are unimportant AND add depth of field.
And at what point did it look like Aku no Hana's characters couldn't exist in a 3D space? All I said was that adding depth of field in anime in general is seldomly done because they don't have to, it wouldn't look good because the drawings aren't detailed or stylized well enough and it takes up time and money that are better spent on more important things.
Again, in the scene mentioned above they kept redrawing Kasuga for every frame but left everything else the same for every frame. Don't say "Oh they did this for effect" because they clearly didn't, it's just lazy animating.
They did it because it's an anime and the only important character in that shot is Kasuga, the others are there for the setting, it really is that simple. Would they animate them if they had the budget and time to? Maybe, but they would probably find better things to spend that time and money on that is 100x more important to the show.
It's not that rotoscoping can make things lively, it's that it has to do it or just keep everything still, but it's really hard to judge whether a scene should use a still frame or rotoscoping, and they make poor decisions as to when to do that.
There is no such thing as "rotoscoping has to do things lively or still", there are no rules for techniques, creative choices and reasons for choosing a technique exists, saying that things have to be done in a certain way is only a conservative and narrow-minded way to look at things. Whether you like it or not is an entirely different thing, but "wrong" does not exist, "wrong" in art only exists when the artist did something and it didn't turn out as he/she intended.
I also, like you are well aware of by now, disagree that they make poor judgements on when to stop animating characters, they're not doing anything differently from any anime I've ever seen, again, you're judging it from a live-action point of view, not an anime point of view.
In 6:38 of episode 2 (go watch it) is one of those, the teacher tells the class to sit down and everyone begins to sit down, everyone is reanimated every frame for this process (even the teacher), and some sit down quicker others and are still being reanimated despite the fact they should be still at this point.
[t]http://i.imgur.com/KwhVJqs.png[/t]
Then, the still abruptly happens and the entire class is frozen in time. No fidgeting or anything for six seconds. And after the six seconds? They start moving again in their chair in response to something the teacher says. Five seconds later they freeze again, in the exact same posture they were frozen in before. It's incredibly jarring.
I haven't seen episode 2 yet, and whilst I understand that that could be jarring it brings me back to the point where they'll only animate them when it's important to the scene. They are animated when they are responding to the teacher, because that holds meaning, the class is paying attention and reacting to the teachers actions, anything else would make them into ragdolls that the teacher are talking to, but when neither the teacher is doing anything to respond to and the students aren't supposed to do anything themselves animating them would not benefit the scene beyond keeping consistency, and in this case consistency is too costly in time and money for something that isn't important.
dgg would still defend it and say it compliments the style of the show
Stereotypes, they grow up so fast. :')
so basically the show is too deep for us who don't appreciate the art?
No.
Didn't you say Angel Beats was a bad show because it had messed up visuals?
What? WHAT? Jeez, you guys are so retarded, just how many times have I talked about Angel Beats and you still mess up my opinion and what I've said about it completely? Jesus Christ.
I have a folder dedicated to Animation Fuckups for Angel Beats, because they are hilarious and bad as fuck.
But at no time ever have I hated on Angel beats for the art, I've hated Angel Beats for a terrible story, storytelling and characters. It was a badly adapted show that started out as utter shit, got quite a bit better (like, climbing from 4/10 to 6/10 material) and then took a dive for the last 3 episodes or so and then the last episode was good.
The art was hilariously bad in the first 4 episodes, but that is not the reason I dislike Angel Beats.

Well, we all like to joke about this, but I don't think anyone of us would actually be happy with the thought of piloting a cyborg (an organic machine) that's 100000x taller than ourselves and setting our own life in danger, not to mention seeing other people damaged and almost dead after having piloted one of those things.

I have to agree, if that kind of situation happened to me, I'm pretty sure I'd do what shinji did, at least some of what he did.

He was pretty against it at the start (to the point of running away), before the dying and when there wasn't much danger cause the other two units were there for backup. In fact, literally nothing goes wrong until [sp]unit-03[/sp] and he's still a whiny bitch. Most kids Shinji's age would love to pilot a robot and live with two hot girls

up to this point considering all the factors i'd probably react in a similar way too.
i mean my dad who abandoned me wants me to do all this shit for him? putting myself in that position i'd let the world burn just to get back at him, but then again i'm thinking or at least trying to think like a 14 year old (irrationally)

They usually cut the connections to reduce the pain (only times it doesn't happen, IIRC, is [sp]unit 3[/sp] and in EoE when [sp]Unit 2 is eaten[/sp]) so they're not in such large amounts of pain

yeah the first thing that happens to shinji is his eva gets her ass kicked.
did i mention they feel the same pain the eva does?
have you ever been impaled, delimbed, beheadded, and just otherwise torn to fucking shreds as a child, felt the whole thing and then have to do it all again tomorrow?

they only cut connections to pain if it's overloading or some shit. i've been watching the series over the past week or so and really i don't recall many battles where that happens. it looks like they experience most of it. that pretty much the entire point of the eva pilot's plight is how much suffering they have to endure.
remember when shinji let his two friends inside his eva? they clearly saw him suffering to the point where they supported him running away.
