I always wanted to have my own little pirate FM. People have told me I have a great voice for radio.
Nobody would listen to a 24/7 renard and rants stream though.
Ah that RF burn thing is awful.

So, technically, could I get a handset, a repeater, install myself near a road, and smalltalk with truckers?
No because then you're an asshole who blocks potential emergency channels apparently...

I thought truckers used normal CB (which AFAIK, you don't need a license for).
My friend has one of these, occasionally discusses scientific matters with buddies from a nearby city.
Costs a lot though, but if I ever got the money, I'd buy it.
That still belongs here. Shortwave can still be considered amateur unless you're like, a business or radio station. It's a great hobby to pick up, you don't need to have a set but I can say that having a license does look good on a resume for some reason.
Fucking yes. I was scanning last night and got a signal in the 6000Khz mark. I think it was Voice of China but I'm not 100% sure.

Yep, apparently they do.
And the wikipedia slang list is hilarious.

Pretty much this, but about China. I was ill one day and scanning the airwaves, and caught Voice of America, I think I uploaded the shitty audio on Youtube.

Really it depends on your country's rules for the "pirate FM" thing but CB in the US at least does not require a license. So yeah, you could.

Stop posting about this. We get it you aren't happy about that. These rules are here for a reason.
For example, if some asshole decided "hey fuck the rules I'm going to play music!" on September 11, a LOT of shit would have been interrupted and blocked. While you may not know, in addition to public works and such, amateurs are a HUGE help to these people.
Seems interesting. Would be fun to just broadcast and have a chat with someone.
