Censorship within reasonable bounds (i.e Preventing things such as porn from being broadcast on PBS or something.)
Paraphrasing a little Franklin:
Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both.
He who gives up freedom for safety deserves neither.
Except giving up a little freedom for security is really the definition of government.
I think you are thinking into it too much. They don't censor during the day to get more views, they do it because they literally have to before the watershed.
Your point about religious shows is pretty stupid aswell. Generally atleast in the UK all the religious channels are in one place, you have to be an idiot to stumble across them accidentally. If a large group of people don't like hearing swearing on TV for example, why should they uncensor it even though you can normally understand what people are saying by listening to the context even with a little bleep over the word?
No they don't, as Comedy Central isn't a broadcast station, and therefore isn't regulated by the FCC. Cable channels only censor their programs to not offend their viewers/advertisers (or maybe it is regulated by the government in the UK, I don't know how it works there)
Maybe something like a man riding a unicycle into a box full of nails and sand belts and showing a realistic representation of what would happen to him.
But again the network itself wouldn't want to show that, because they would lose viewers, and their sponsors would pull their advertisements.
If you have the option to opt out of the censorship, yeah.
Like, sometime in the near future, have TV and Internet completely uncensored, but have a little disclaimer and an opt in or out feature that'd pop up on screen that you could select which one with the remote. It'd be a simple fix to a feature that people will never stop complaining about. Now I know it wouldn't be possible now due technical limitations like people not having digital TV services and stuff.
I think this would be good since I personally don't mind nudity or gore, but there are some times when I don't want to see it or simply don't care.
Only to the point where the absence of censorship could put a person at physical harm, like yelling "fire" in a crowded theater or "terrorist" on a plane, aka causing panic and distress. Censoring swear words is unintelligent and immature, not even considering the ethics of the situation.
Though parents choosing to censor their TV for their children is acceptable as long as it's censoring strictly adult linguistics like swear words and not concepts or information. It'd be unethical and horrifying to allow parents to censor ideas to create ignorance in their children. I can empathize with not wanting children to say "fuck", regardless of how illogical it is, but depriving children of knowledge is sick.
