Jhonen Vasquez (the creator) thought he'd be able to make the cartoon how he wanted and when they kept limiting him he eventually got pissed and decided not to do it anymore. They had to improvise and write their own episodes for the last few shows the last season because he had left.
He also complained how he'd be sitting there giving ideas and how people are critisizing him on them people who don't even watch cartoons or like them and he had to go with what they were saying.
^basically. + there are a lot of references to his other work in invader zim..just ways of sneaking in his own work without people knowing. Here are some examples.

(in weed's case, in a tl;dr explination, the tobacco industry back in the 1900's hated the usefullness and popularity of marijuana, since it can be used to make therapeutic oils, rope, clothes ect, and when that weed-wallet's wears out you can smoke it later. so they spread rumors.)

As said before the show was canceled officially for bad ratings, but jhonen vasquez grew bored with it. It was going to be the shows last season anyway, they were working on a movie to end the series in which zim would take earth over with the help of gaz, dib would be captured and used as a test subject.
