Tune the bass-drum low, put in some pillows, and you should be good to go.
tune a bassdrum?
no. i want a dead thud. that is a standpoint in which i will not move from unless i move to a genre that requires a tuned bass drum. rock does not.
By this logic you should just take the heads off your bass drum... Muffling on a bass drum is an attempt to change the resonance of the drum, you still have tuning to go through. The pitch of the bass drum does believe it or not does matter.
by that logic you wouldn't even have to buy a bassdrum, a pillow would do, deadest thud in town

anyway i don't know who told you that gerbile, but the one who did is the wrongest person in the world

i dont hear a difference between a dead and a tuned bass drum. i played with my front head off for a while, and am now playing with my front head on.
well im not playing the kick at all because of my leg situation... ill try your idea of "tuning" it and see what becomes.
[editline]27th June 2011[/editline]
bassb. i love how you attack or point out anything awry in what i say. everything you point something out i store it in my head to not make the mistake or just to take into consideration of what you said when im doing whatever the topic was again.
means alot and helps me progress
so thank you
i can't tell if you're being serious, you cannot hear the difference between a dead and a tuned bassdrum, you can't be serious but it doesn't look like sarcasm
on the second note i can't tell again if you're being serious, but you seem to get in every bad habit drummers tend to get in. Buying gimmicks, expanding a horrible kit to a big horrible mismatched kit with, buying cheap cymbals, not using a ride, deadening drums.
I've been in Pearls online forum for years now and if you would post the ideas that you have now people would get very mad at you, honestly the things i say are not based on nothing, they are the combined experience of hundreds of drummers, of which many professionals, on drum forums that i picked up over the years.
i myself am not an amazing drummer by all means, but I try and pick up as much advice as i can to be the best drummer that i can be. And help other to.
Na im being serious
the cheap cymbals. Heh got that idea out of my head quickly. Im extremely glad I ddidnt go b8 especially when I tried them out inshore. As mentioned I got xs20 hats and crash instead. As for the ride.... I just didn't money ya know. Im actually at the first day of my fulltime job right now and am getting that ride.
The only reason I want a large kit is not to have it all set up at once all the time, but to have the option of the different sounds that a 8 inch tom makes opposed to a 13 inch tom. The second bassdrum is more or less because of the response of two drums instead of two pedals on one.
that's just what I think ya know.
just remember that a small good sounding kit is always better than a big horrible kit.
and the xs20's are great value so you did that right i guess. though i always recommend buying second hand.
YYeah. There's a certain charm about a simple 4 piece kit that I absolutely love. One crash, ride over the right of the bass drum
Awww yeah
heres what my crash sounds like when i use it as a ride within a beat

I broke my arm awhile back and now I'm having to basically reteach myself to play all over again, Kind of dis-heartening, I used to be pretty decent. :smith:
Anyway here's my kit, the cymbals and setup have been changed and in my opinion updated:

Ugh, I can't stand having my ride so low. I feel just, way to uncomfortable with a low ride. Just feels wrong. I also hate my snare stand, it is so short I cannot do rimshots in it without hitting myself. Really need to replace it.
make you rides stand higher :v:, can't you adjust your snare stand?

it sounds way thin, a ride will bring so much more cut to the mix and will sound so much fuller, you'll love it

Its as high as it will get.
you ride is as high as it goes? or your snare?
Snare, my ride is in the perfect spot, not to high not to low.
my xs20 crash has cracked which means im using bad technique woo.
so im gonna get it replaced and not play songs till i get my technique and chops better so i don't hit as hard all the time.
wheres that image that told you how to hit a cymbal correctly?
right here

I once told my friend I hit cymbals in a sort of sweeping motion. He took it the fucking wrong way and told every percussionist in my school that I hit the cymbal by swinging my stick near parallel to the cymbal to hit it.
a lot of drummers do that in all fairness. i sometimes do too, but i get what you mean, you can oversweep it of course :v:
your friend is an idiot
does that iamge apply to high hats also or strictly to crash\china\splash ect cymbals
if your hi-hats are open playing with a slight sweep is better, but if they are closed it doesn't really matter.
hi hats are small cymbals that are generally fairly flexible, so they don't break that fast, same goes for splashes, but splashes do tend to break on some people because they assume "it's small, it won't break". this is probably the most important on chinas, because of their unnatural shape with a crease in it they can break like anything. Especially if you're one of those people that put their china upside down *cringe*.
what wrong with it upsidedown? it saves sticks for me because i dont hit the sort of upper "crown" of it (if it was rightside up, which i would where it is positioned, about 5 inches below eye level)
and ive broken a set of ZBT hats before. thats why i asked. I also broke the crash ride but to be fair in the first few months of playing i used all arm, hit as hard as i could, and had them tighened down.
the hats were cause i dropped them though.
you are supposed to mount your china like this

otherwise it's wrong, and hateful
oh i thought the side with the brand name was rightside up and upside down was the blank side
yeah mine is mounted like that

loads of companies print on the other side.
i might be going out of line by saying that it's wrong otherwise, but if you're really going to hit it on the edge, and not only bow it it's a very bad idea to put the crease pointing down.
Mount your china wrong, and you will chew through more sticks than a beaver in heat.
Mount your china wrong, and you will chew through more sticks than a beaver in heat.
I mount my china as shown in the picture, however I hit it on the flange due to the difference in sound compared to hitting the edge. It gives a trashier sound, rather than a gongy sound which some people actually like. Also, you can mount a china either way. Both are technically correct.
Covering TMV songs is so fun. Will post some when I record them

this song is so fucking fun to play

when mounting it like that you will always be hitting the flange, you're kind of supposed to.
China's were actually invented for Jazz bands, and they loved the sound it made when hitting it like a ride, but since then it's only used for metal.
