I want to learn to play the drums, any idea where I should start?
what kind of drums? kit drumming, marching drums, latin percussion? What do you want to do mate
China's were actually invented for Jazz bands, and they loved the sound it made when hitting it like a ride, but since then it's only used for metal.
They started in China as some kind of cymbals for religious purposes, I think, but jazz musicians used them and called them a "swish" cymbal.
China's were actually invented for Jazz bands, and they loved the sound it made when hitting it like a ride, but since then it's only used for metal.
they weren't, and i said that it's fine to mount them flange down if you're only going to bow it.
what kind of drums? kit drumming, marching drums, latin percussion? What do you want to do mate
Kit Drumming
i suggest going to guitar center and trying out drumsets and talking to the people there about getting started into kit drumming my ad=vice would be to pick up a pad and experiment with sticks at the store, find the right size, then buy the pad and sticks and start off on rudiments and chops whats a good brand for bass drums
a good brand for bass drums is not buying them seperate. but if you insist on a mismatched kit, pearl, yamaha, tama or any other well known brand will do.
Does anyone know what the contact info for Ludwig? I can't find email address or phone numbers or nothing Well musisicians friend does special orders so im gonna see if I can order the exact bass drum I have now so I hope this works out

This is actually a right hit angle if you want to make a sound effect of a bell on the cymbal.
no, that is never the right angle. the sound effect of a bell is hitting the cymbal on the bell, you're ruining the bronze and your sticks if you do otherwise.
just got back from guitar center. I tried the zildjian and sabian rides i hated them all. every single one. anyone have a 2002 ride? bonham used one and i love how it sounds
Ive got $600 to spend on new cymbals. Im using some shitty mienl brass cymbals that came with my kit that blow godzillas dick and have been for a year. What do you guys think of Sabians xs20s?
II have xs20 hats and a 16 inch med crash. Professional sound for an extreme value. I don't quite like the ride but everything else in the line is great
xs20 certainly are nice, but for 600 i recon you could get some real professional cymbals, 2002 series, K customs etc. especially if you shop around on ebay and the likes you can get some wicked cymbals for that money. I got my 14" 2002 Sound edges at about 220 dollars, 19" crash at around 180, i recon could get a pretty sweet ride for the 200 left (i have a 20" alpha dry ride, that i love, at only around 80 dollars) [editline]10th July 2011[/editline]
just got back from guitar center. I somehow expect you to want to crash your ride, so a regular 2002 ride would be pretty nice for you, or maybe a 2002 power ride. 24" is not nearly as usable as the 20" models, consider the 22" one.
No I don't want to crash my ride. The way I see it crashes are for crashing and rides are for riding. Just my opinion. im also gonna go with better advice and invest into a new kit instead of expanding this one. Im just gonna make the one I have now into a Bonham kit and use my low tom as a floor and blah blah. gonna look into tams kits at the moment. The rockstar sounds good, but im gonna look at both below my price range and way above it to get a good feel about prices and sound and ect And by Bonham style I mean same general setup, as in the 5 piece setup he uses. I want my new kit to be a large kit with a simple minimum of 2 bass drums. Anything else is not too important at the moment
you are a great person, everything you said in your post is great. Tama Rockstar is great value, coupled with the xs20 you probably have the best price/quality of many many kits, but if you are looking for bonham esque sizes i am pretty sure they don't offer them. Make sure to have a look around on Ebay and the likes, definatly worth it, you can pick up great kits that even include hardware for less than what a new shellset would cost.
Okay so im on muscisians friend and im just browsing at the moment. What does it mean if a set doesn't come with hardware? Do I get the minimum mmounting equipment such as brackets that mount toms. To the bass drum, Or is it shells only and nothing but heads and what is actually on the drum
you get everything but the stands, you get the lugs, you get the rims, you get the (stock) heads, you get the mounting points and everything. you won't get anything to mount the toms to the bass drum (i prefer a stand anyway) but the bass drum might have a mounting point on it so you'll only need arms (but usually not because most people prefer virgin bass drums) so yeah basically just what is on the drum, detach all your drumsets drums and thats what you'll get.
whats the best way to judge hardware requirements? would it be to check what you need when you get the shells or just guess based on reviews and what not? i notice the rockstar says it uses the starcast mouting system. that means that the starcast mount is attached to the tom right?
usually a company will use one type of mount, tama use L rods, the starcast mounting system only means that the batter side hoop has a mounting point on it so no holes had to be drilled in the shell for the mounting. any type of stand with L rods will do, so for example, no standard pearl tom mounts, because those are 7/8 tubing.
Proprietary hardware....I see. But what do the l rods connect to? There seems to be abort of largediameter rod that come from the bass drum and the rods connect to it. But what is it called
those sometimes seem to come with the drums, but if a kit has the starcast mount system i'm pretty positive that the bass drum will have no mount. otherwise these are generally referred to as tom arms
If you buy a Tama kit be aware that the L rods on PDP and DWs hardware are smaller than Tamas and are not compatible.
Just bought an alesis dm5 pro, only just started to learn to play so its a great kit to start on, already feeling quite limited with the hi-hat though, its just instant on and off but I'll get something better later.
I actually dont mind if my ride is crashable/washy, but too much and it ruins the versatility. I get my 22 Omni ride(which is both washy and controlled at the same time) and hhx in two weeks. I will also get a cheap auxilary snare. Just in time for a gig.
If you buy a Tama kit be aware that the L rods on PDP and DWs hardware are smaller than Tamas and are not compatible.
thanks for the info i havent decided obviously since i just started looking but i just have tama on the mind so it makes a good reference when asking questions.
Anyone know anything about steel drums? I've been getting interested in them and I want to know a little more about playing them, or which kind I would want to buy.
Anyone know anything about steel drums? I think, been a while since I've read up on steel drums.
AAre drums like the maple starclassics even worth the extremely hefty pricetag? I do like the sound but I mean.... 1600 for a 5 piece then 1200 for the second bass drum.....

It varies depending on what you get though. Some people find it worth it, some people find a Pearl Reference kit worth it. Its all in what you're looking for man.
