the starclassics are really nice but there is always a larger degree of craftsmanship, when you get above the 2000 dollars for a five piece it's all about the details. i'd say the starclassics are worth it, but i'll always be a pearl fan above all.
If I wanted to do a maple starclassic 7 piece it would be near 4 grand without hardware..... I think ill buy one of those when im 45 and having a midlife crisi
I find that a lot of higher end closer to pro level kits usually are hardwareless because typically by the time you get that kit. You've gone through beginner level kits and they assume you already have hardware.
no, it's because anyone who wants a professional kit is going to compose it himself, including hardware, a lot of people like different setups and therefore need different kits. they aren't assuming you already own hardware, they're giving you the complete option to decide for yourself.
Yep, all the highest end kits are more or less costum kits, that you tailor for your own purposes. It all comes down to what brand you like. I personally like Gretsch USA Costums or Sonor SQ2's.
no, that is never the right angle. the sound effect of a bell is hitting the cymbal on the bell, you're ruining the bronze and your sticks if you do otherwise.
Wrong. There's other effect you, kid, didn't ever know about. If you slightly hit cymbal with your stick at an angle of 90 degrees (hope you ever worked with math), you'll get another bell effect.
If you hit your cymbal at an angle of 90 degrees you're ruining your cymbals and sticks at a gigantic pace you dimwit. I can't tell if you're trolling but with all respect I will seriously reply; that image was made by Paiste, one of the big three of cymbal creators they know literally everything about cymbals better than you, and they are telling you that thats the wrong way. Besides if you every played a drumkit you would know that hitting the cymbal like that equals taking a knife to your sticks, something that is not recommended. You should also know that the sound is basically non existant because it is so quiet.
Stabbing the cymbals at 90 degrees sounds pretty wrong to me. Also, why are you calling everyone "kid"?
my choice for tama is gonna be the rockstar (8 piece; 2x bass, 3x rack tom, 2x floor tom, snare.). the imperialstar looked good, but reviews say the rockstar is better for the money. im looking at pearl for a choice there. i was recommended the export but i can't do much research where i am now. what's a good pearl kit to start looking on. the only fucking thing with the rockstar is that it says that it uses teh starcast, but every picture shows the drums mounting into a bass drum, and into the middle of the toms...... i don't know what fucking hardware to buy. i also plan to go into a guitar center and ask to set up a rockstar kit so i can try before i buy. ok so i got my hardware list worked out that i will buy regardless of the mounts (since i know they use the same L rods) The Drums Double Tom Floor Stand Roadpro cymbal and tom combonation stand Now thats 1000 dollars minus a few cents. which is prefect! but i dont need the legs for the bass drums and floor toms right? actually if it is starcast will the toms be on legs or a different mount
you won't need those legs no, and starcast mounts will have the same mounts as tom mounted mounts. the double tom stand is great, roadpro hardware is perfect value too. The bassdrums will have mounts on them, but i recommend just screwing them off and putting the toms on stands, gives you much more position ability and virgin drums just sound a tat better. FYI the picture on musicians' friend does show the starmount system. i still consider the 8 piece to be massive overkill you'll be paying yourself black and blue, but i guess the option to switch out drums is nice. You forgot the cost for all new heads, you definatly need those batter and reso.
You will save yourself a lot of money, by buying a 4 or 5 piece, and buying double-pedals. Easier to carry around for gigs too.
You forgot the cost for all new heads, you definatly need those batter and reso.
to replace the batter heads for all the tom will be 64 dollars. and i can grab bass patches so i wouldnt have to replace my bass batter heads right away. i was watching a youtube video this one actually where the standard tama bottom was used and with a good tuning, a very nice result was produced. i figure i don't need resonance heads as soon as i get it. of course they sound a different in person then when mic'd, but i have reasonably familiarized myself with the difference. yeah it probably will be a bitch to carry around.... but my minimalistic approach on cymbals will make up for it. keep in mind, this is only my choice for the TAMA brand. I am yet to look at pearls, yamahas and ludwigs 1200 with all new batter heads (incl. bass), hardware, shell pack, and another pedal. so yeah i got everything planned oh no i lied. 58 bucks shipping (holy shit cheap). 1264.00 USD
8 piece kit with minimalistic cymbal setup? I am not a fan of this idea. I completely agree with what Thaard said, double bass pedals is always more convenient than two bassdrums and with decent pedals the difference can hardly be noticed.
Anyone know any decent cheap double bass pedals? I'm shit poor but desperately need one for gigs lol
Tama Iron Cobra JR. is absolutely amazing value. Pearl p-120tw is great too.
Ya, what BassB said. Tama's or Pearls. Good hardware for cheap prices.
8 piece kit with minimalistic cymbal setup? I am not a fan of this idea. I completely agree with what Thaard said, double bass pedals is always more convenient than two bassdrums and with decent pedals the difference can hardly be noticed.
I just want the double set.... if i dont need the second one, whether it be space constraints or doesn't fit the setlist, i leave it at home. not that hard to figure out... and minimalistic isn't like... 2 cymbals. 2 crashes, hats, ride, china, splash. thats what i think minimal is. I see drummers who have like 10 crash cymbals 14 chinas 3 rides and like.. for what... most crashes withinn the same line sound the same, chinas, i give to this, do sound different and so do rides. but who really notices? [editline]26th July 2011[/editline]
Anyone know any decent cheap double bass pedals? if you say no one notices the difference between cymbals you're wrong, it is very very noticeable. much more so than drums. Which you'll have lots of that will sound more like each other than any two different crashes will
well I came to that conclusion after everyone told Me my aax. And xs20. Crashes sounded the same
wow really... they're pretty deaf in that case. don't expect them to hear the difference between a tom and your bassdrum.
Epic! There are 4 parts, and I recommend watching all of them.
anyone have any comments on the pearl forum drums?
I have a question, how many of you have actually played drums in band, as in the class? I've been playing drums since 4th grade, and I hate it when someone says they're a drummer because they can play the drumset. No, there's a lot more then that.

Playing drums aka using it as a musical instrument, communicating, as an extension of yourself and your expressions, is what I think makes a good drummer. Hitting drums = bashing skins without no finesse or any musical context, is something that I mostly dislike.

Rrriiight....

Drumming in a band is so completely different than drumming on your own, you should definitely jam with others as much as possible, there is no way to learn more than that way. [editline]29th July 2011[/editline]
anyone have any comments on the pearl forum drums?
don't buy the forums, they're decent for the price but you're much better off buying export or even a masters if you can afford it. you're going to be playing these for years so you might as well invest.
II was actually recommended the exports but I couldn't find anything on them on musicians friend but guitar center seems to sell it. Only the fusion kit and the bass drum. They don't sell the 8 piece together I guess. Ill do some research on them.

If people want to play drumset I'm all for it, but percussion is where it's at. :v: [editline]29th July 2011[/editline] I mean this.
