Actually, I think what happens here is that the carboxylic acid will protonate the amine group to give an amine-carboxylate salt (that is, R-NH[SUB]3[/SUB][SUP]+ [/SUP]and R-COO[SUP]-[/SUP]). This prevents condensation from happening as the amine group is no longer nucleophilic and thus cannot attack the electrophile (which, in this case, will be the carboxylic acid group).
A salt plus benzene as by products?
So in my last year of highschool during chem we had to make esters for one prac. At the end of the class every group had to go around to every other group and smell their esters and attribute a smell to it (after smelling and identifying their own ester).
So after we had all finished and had let our teacher know we all had to get to it. The prac manual (and the teacher) had both specified to hold our heads somewhat above the beaker and to waft the fumes up to our noses, NOT to put our faces right over the beakers and take a deep breath. Somehow I managed to miss BOTH of these instructions and did the exact thing I wasn't supposed to!
Our ester's odour? Banana!
The next groups ester? Banana!
The one after that? Banana!
The one after that? Banana!
... for about a week I could smell NOTHING but fucking (fake) banana. Fuck esters!
You're lucky. When we did that, I did the exact same except with something smelled of glue. That's not a nice smell.
You're lucky. When we did that, I did the exact same except with something smelled of glue. That's not a nice smell.
I did the exact thing but with concentrated acetic acid. That's barely a smell, that's basically getting it up your nose.
[sp]It burns.[/sp]
man who the fuck taught you guys lab safety procedures
I guess being absent-minded has its pros and cons
I guess that's why I prefer physics
[editline]16th February 2013[/editline]
Yeah, I know that now
(also automurgarrerer)
Well I guess if we're talking about lab accidents:
One time we had to turn hydrous (I forget which substance) into anhydrous whatever and calculate the coefficent for the H20 in whatever x H20. We let the substance cool before measuring it, and I put my hand down on the table - right where we left it to cool.
I picked up a 185 degC aluminum block off an active hotplate last semester. I know the temperature of it because I had just stuck a digital thermometer in it.
Got bandaged up then wrote a midterm for the same class the next day :v:
I also accidentally touched the nozzle of the glacial acetic acid auto dispenser a few labs before. I still have an acid burn from it.
My prof was talking about how a previous safety officer for the science department accidentally tripped the circuit breaker for the fume hoods when a synthesis involving chlorine gas byproduct was underway. Hazmat had to be called in for that.
This thread makes me want to take ap chem instead of ap physics my senior year in highschool.
stoich and sigfigs was fun imo.
I was using a tripod with a bunsen once, I don't know what happened but it heated up to a ridiculous temperature, we let it cool for half an hour and it was still instantly boiling water sprinkled on it. It was too hot to hold even through an inch-thick wad of wet paper towels.
Well you are using a flame in the 900-1600 degC range to heat it.
Someone asked me if sending grain to space caused it to change its molecular formula. I told them if it did they would be drinking ether (CH3OCH3 vs CH3CH2OH) :v:
This thread is very endothermic compared to the history thread. We need a source of heat, burn the history thread's books!
man who the fuck taught you guys lab safety procedures
Well, esters were the only chemical we could smell like that.
someone make me methylenedioxy-n-methamphetamine <3333

If you did it, it's fancy

Ripped it off Wikipedia :v:
I wish I was that good at drawing compounds

Don't worry it's all about synthesizing them, not drawing :3

mega easy with chemdraw
I tried drawing some molecules with chemdraw but they don't look as good, can you decide how long the bonds are without having to estimate it?

you can set up styles to do stuff like this - it's important when you're drawing them to use in lab reports and so on so it looks consistent
Hit F9 to normalize everything.
Edit: Have a 3D Fe(acetylacetonato)3 molecule.

terrible place to buy. Ebay gets nice big pitchblende samples hundreds of times more radioactive than that puny piece.

boy i sure do love writing these lab write ups
ever since my teacher suggested to use excel to crunch data making lab write ups turned into arts and crafts time
[editline]18th February 2013[/editline]
also isn't it great when your percent errors have triple digits

Trying to get a puny summerjob at BASF to crunch data. I feel like my Excel/Matlab/C++ knowledge could come in useful (not having too much hope though, I'm just tired of doing random shit like cleaning peoples houses or sitting at a fucking cash register).

Good luck with that man :)
My dream career was to move to Germany and work at BASF after my degree.
Yeah I'm lucky I live in Antwerp where they have a huge industrial complex, so I don't even require a car to get there I think.
I got to touch lead today, it's not really that astounding, but I feel really awesome because only I would think that's cool.
