Look, I basically have the same impression as you, crossovers simply happen, in any fandom, at any time. Here's what I think are the main magnifiers that make MLP crossovers stand out.
1. Style easily stands out (nonhuman characters, bright colors, fluffy setting). Crossovers are generally more accepted by outsiders if it's among similar things. [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Smash_Bros._(series)]Generally.[/url]
2. Negative connotation of the franchise due to the peripheral viewer demographic consisting of people that are regarded as too old and/or male, which is creepy for certain people. This by extension also affects crossovers.
3. Related to the above, the internet is great at giving loud minorities the biggest loudspeakers. These loud minorities are also boosted by serving as examples for strawman arguments. Basically the Internet encourages you to join either the "Brony" or the "Brony hater" camp and leaves little space for gray options.
4. Popularity of the show in general. If something is more popular, more fanart is produced and you'll see it more frequently. If you spend the majority of your day on the internet, you'll easily get the impression it's being pushed into your face. Similar reason why "casual" internet users are enjoying so many memes other more "hardcore" internet users deem already old and overused.
But I'm basically playing devil's advocate here and have to come up with my own reasons since I don't get much of a rational response from people I ask. I typed this out in the hope it might be able to bring some closure to a debate that keeps coming up in this thread, but if it continues and anyone would like to type out an extensive reply to this post of mine, I'd prefer it if we transfered it from this thread to PMs.

This was not the case and there were many wrong things with these pictures, and I think you were being too kind on the critique just because you like my little pony. But it's still a joke that has been done several times before and is not enhanced in any way by the introduction of ponies. All the guy did was shoehorn ponies into an old joke to make it popular, and you can see it makes no sense with ponies using a laptop and whatnot.
If he's one of the better artists in the fandom as you say, I can attest he is not very good with scenarios.
