Because they are manchildren stuck between the two. At least that's my theory. Things like Sonic, Pokemon, or Kingdom Hearts provide some combination of colorful and idealistic world they feel safe in with a plot and sense of conflict to that appeals to the adult side and makes it more "real." I'm on the editing staff of my highschool's art and literature magazine (I swear, it's nowhere near as awful as it sounds, a lot of the stuff we get is quite good and most of the people are pretty bro-tier), and legend goes that some creeper submitted this picture of two almost-humanoid dragons (clearly his OCs) to the magazine with "Dragon's Love" written on it.
Since then, we've added our own Pixar-esque easter egg by hiding the phrase "Dragon's Love" in every issue.
