The whole thing with the gray pon was dumb. The studio did a simple shout out to them by giving the character a VA, and when they were forced to censor/change it the fandom attacked them and anybody who had the mental coherency to point out why it could be considered offensive and that the studio was simply doing it's job.
It's really a microcosm of a fandom that takes, takes and takes.
