The vaguely H.R Geiger inspired backdrops kinda lose their effect when you've got the multiverses biggest doufus wandering around making vaguely sexual comments about giant heads and bluntly asking people about their involvement in a murder.

H. R. Geiger designed the dark world in the original Darkseed. He wasn't fired and I doubt anyone else working on it was creepier than him.
Darkseed 2 was made by a different group of people. Geiger wasn't directly involved with it (Mike Dawson wasn't involved at all), the designers used art he already made as backgrounds and drew walkways over them. The only dark worlder in Darkseed 2 that doesn't appear to have been made by Geiger is The Behemoth, which looked like a human skull with a sawblade in its cranium attached to a black snake's body. I doubt anyone who considers that to be a worthy final boss would be fired for being too creepy.

What did mike do to the game devs? His character in DS2 was just awful, he loved a giant darkworld head. I dunno what cyberdreams were on at the time as they made the i have no mouth and I must scream game..

Probably nothing. The plot twist was based around the idea that there was a dark world Mike, and with the whole opposites theme his character would need to contrast against the dark world version. DS1 Mike doesn't contrast against anything so they had to rewrite him. That's my theory, anyway.
Still it would've been better to center the game around a different character because the change is extremely evident and almost looks like an attempt at character assassination. Chris Gilbert's voice doesn't help. The real Mike Dawson had a pretty deep voice whereas Chris has a whiny, high-pitched one.
Using mike in DS2 also creates a plothole, as there was already a dark world Mike in DS1, the floating blob in front of the library.
