Kinda a bummer
but now seeing that transition, I would really wanna see a process video or the steps in between.
Mako made me feel self conscious about my layers so I really cleaned them up so the EXACT process isn't there, but the first thing I said in that post pretty much perfectly sums it up. I did that quick initial sketch and just began adding layers working mainly back to front, so there was basically like 3 different mock up paintings underneath that one with somewhat different poses, light schemes, etc.
I am in general a messy artist, and it slows me down A LOT, when this piece couldve been way more efficient and actually benefited from proper perspective. Also for those curious it is fan art for Elder Scrolls, both are dunmer (dark elves) with the one in the back being an ash vampire. It will be way more recognizable once I draw in the third eye in his forehead, just kind of iffy on how I am going to go about it.
The dunmer in the front is an alteration (physical manipulation) mage, who making use of my take on the flesh spells which are protective spells that take the properties of a certain material. For example, stoneflesh would make your skin as hard as rock, blah blah blah... But I decided to play with the idea of alteration mages using materials around them. Hence the idea of the daedric binding words holding those chunks of Orisium together. I really liked this challenge because I had many highly detailed things, with none of them being the actual center of the piece. I kind of fucked it up by making the axe too bright, but the axe is made from malachite, and I wanted to really focus on making many different materials that can be easily seen as different from things with somewhat similar traits. (Like the orisium chunk armor)
Overall I had a lot of fun with it so far and the TES games have always a fond place in my heart that lets my imagination go buck wild and I love it.
edit - The main inspiration for the ash vampire and the piece was after viewing a 3d render of Skywind's (Skyrim mod that I am dying for it to be fiinished) ash vampire. Though nothing on the piece is taken directly from anything other than my imagination.
Your piece was the most drastic difference I've ever seen after clicking the update link.
I added some more lips in more poses. My teeth look terrible IRL, don't judge. :v:

They look kinda odd.
I've been bored as fuck in Statics lately and have been doodling spaceships, but everything I draw comes out looking like a schematic. I am getting better at drawing in 3D, though, as that class is honestly mostly just drawing diagrams in 3D haha
I'd post but I want to let the quality come up a biiiiit more before I do that. And I really need to finish other arte stuff first.
I don't think anyone will remember, but just under a year ago I posted this here to see what you guys thought of it.

The main bit of advice I remember is the perspective being all wonky, so I decided to give it another go, almost a year later.

I think the perspective is definitely an improvement, but I still need to work on my lighting and texturing a tad.

So this is my first digital painting in a looong time, so it was a shaky jump back into the saddle. My main issue is perspective as I kind of just...jumped into it with no planning what so ever which also slowed down the production of this immensely:

About 5 hours of work, my particular favorite of the piece is the use of color, which I took an extremely long time on.
edit - I noticed a pretty glaring error so here is a quick update:

How long have you been planning this gag for lol
Anyway I hope I don't make you feel bad about your piece or I'll be the one feeling guilty, but I think there are some major things that could be fixed here. In fact I'll just stick to the biggest issue - it's really dark. REALLY dark; I had real difficulty trying to figure out what was what and what was going on. Even now after a couple of minutes of looking some things are still confusing. I think your knowledge of light is really letting you down, you've got different elements lit in different ways from different directions, the colour of the light and general mood established in the bg is not present on the characters, there's no ambient light at all, there are cast shadows missing and tonnes of shadow which shouldn't be there. It feels like every bit of it has been done independently via guesswork and you're just relying on somewhat competent rendering skill with a lot of labour time behind it to get things looking good (and I have to be honest and say that even the rendering is not particularly good, sorry). And I guess an equally big issue is the comp - it's really crammed tight, cluttered and unappealing, and the characters are awkwardly posed and positioned. So as you say jumping in without any preparation has not done you any favours here.
I'll leave it at that and I do feel guilty because it seems like you've been chiseling away at this for a while and really eager to post it and you're feeling really good about it etc. so I apologise for how it will probably feel to read this. I know how shitty it is when you're pleased with something and it's not well received.

to add onto this, i think you should have started with flat colour to block everything out and finalised local shadow from the light source first, before then moving onto environmental lighting. that way you would have more control over how the "light" illuminates the scene and you can play around with brightness/contrast
but i don't know what your process is so maybe you did do this
Yea not to mention theyre both the same race yet the one in the background brought forward would be like twice as tall. I think the issue is I made a light source from directly behind, so I wanted the dimness. I think a way to fix this is to move more of the runic lettering over the entire arms to create a glow on the face. The issue is that I just didnt want to cover up the work done on orisium. I can try brightening all of it. Keep in mind I haven't really added anything in terms of atmospherics and the background will be much more refined branches and coloring wise. The sky will also be blocked in with a solid coloring, it is on its own layer.
I have a terrible habit of zoning out and king of inflating things forward, so I can try moving him around. To solve the perspective issue I could raise him, but to bring him to proper height it would pretty much cover the background vampire entirely. So I was considering expanding the scene a bit and creating a hill scene.
Which actually gives me an idea to shift the light source a bit. brb brb brb
edit - oh the gag mako I just hid the top layers and left a colorize layer on and saved a png so not very long lol
well even with the light source directly behind, it would still bounce off whatever was in front of him, so there should still be a soft light on the front of his face
Well thats why his face isn't completely black, but yea I'll increase it using the runic word idea I had so it works out
edit - This actually provides me with a good opportunity to fix some other things that have been bothering me, like I kind of zoned out and scribbled too many dead trees for the area I was trying to represent.

Irises are too large- I think you're losing the sphere of it or not scaling correctly when you add it into a face. A wide open eye should show the whole of the iris, while a normally opened eye generally shows ~75-80% of it.

A "Legendary Pictures" style for Spacegodzilla.
Most people go for a crystalline/stalagmite style with huge, branching spikes or twisting spires. For me, I looked to geodes and tried to capture a squat, rocky, almost unbreakable feel.
[editline]2nd February 2016[/editline]
And before anybody says, yes, Spacegodzilla has plenty of teefus.
Another quiet day at work, so I got one of the IT technicians to install 123D make, meshmixer, catch. Unfortunately our school PCs are so shite two of the three applications crashed on start so I was only able to use the example shapes in 123D make. To be honest it's a pretty nifty free app and after a while getting everything sorted I managed to make a torus ring.

And in the interim I made a certain character into a teacoaster...
[thumb]http://i.imgur.com/cGhh41S.jpg[/thumb]
Used illustrator to do a simple 6 colour vector on the image. Got rid of the colours I didn't need, changed it into black and white, redrew the circle and finally cut it out on the laser.

So I've got a big project coming up, but I've been out of the painting/designing game for so long that I felt I needed to touch up my (already, as far as I'm concerned) rusty and underdeveloped skills.
Have a sweet video that I found on my travels:

Also can anybody tell me what 'cut lines' are in the context of object design? I've heard Scott Robertson and another concept artist mention them in video interviews, but Google gives me nothing but page layout design

Any recommendations for guides on how to draw faces?
Any recommendations for guides on how to draw faces?
Everyone's going to direct you to loomis in one way or another but I would say study faces and their structure from references and find which way of replicating them works for you. I think Anthony Jones has some videos on faces on his gumroad and there's proko on youtube. Drawabox.com has a lesson on human heads too so check it out for some more info/guidelines.
Try drawing simplified head shapes first from lots of angles (plenty of ref online), skulls too and apply that knowledge when drawing actual faces I suppose.
And draw a shitload of faces

Cut lines are seams between metal panels that appear all the time on vehicle designs. They're important because they help indicate perspective, as well as give clues to the fabrication of the vehicle - helping sell your concept as a real thing that was welded together and not a die cast mold made from one piece of material. A good example would be the door gap on a car.

Might eventually try reproducing them digitally, but for now I'm fine keeping them on paper.
*The legs on both are meant for fast-paced movement, and kicking. That's why they're somewhat tapered and non-humanoid in appearance below the hips and/or knees.
EDIT: Oh, and I forgot to mention that the lines may seem a bit thick or distorted due to the small size of the sketchbook and my fairly simple pen I have for inking: a fine-tip permanent marker+pen deal. I'm working on getting some Copics or similar pens soon.
BTW, my handwriting sucks, so feel free to ignore it.
