Never really drew anything before, attempted a thing in Illustrator
It's not really an achievement if it's just a trace... I mean no offense or anything but tracing is just stupid, you don't learn anything that way..
Never really drew anything before
and still haven't lol
What's with the increase of tracing here suddenly
we're in GD, all the fresh meat comes flooding in
It's not completely traced but I don't have the artistic capability to draw something completely on my own that doesn't look like a potato. I thought this was a good way to get started
A good way to get started is to learn the fundamentals. Learn how to hold a pen/pencil, learn how to erase, learn how to draw blocks, how to strokes, getting the shapes right. Those kinds of stuff.

I thought this was a good way to get started
I don't think tracing involves much skill or really does a great deal for improving, but I guess people enjoy it. However, if you're going to post a trace I think you should say it's a trace. In my eyes it's not cool to trace something - especially somebody elses drawing, and come in here without even mentioning that you've traced it. I think in general there is an assumption when you post a drawing in this thread that it's an original piece that you've drawn starting from blank.
I think in general there is an assumption when you post a drawing in this thread that it's an original piece that you've drawn starting from blank.
I never visited this thread before so I had no idea, sorry about that.
np. when you're outlining shapes do you use vertical and horizontal lines? or just angled lines? how do you determine relationships? in terms of shapes your portrait is generally fairly accurate but obviously the execution leaves something to be desired. alt-tabbing your ref is a bit of a headache lol definitely avoid having to do that if possible. working more on paper would be good for you anyway I did a quick drawing of the same guy, so here's how I might handle it, might help you to see how someone else's wip actually appears - first, dodgy construction just so there's some kind of base to work on. like 20 seconds breakdown of shapes/forms/relationships, keeping it real light. I didn't bother measuring anything but this is the stage where you should measure to get an accurate picture. probably the most important stage. I blew through it cuz I knew I could just tweak it if went wrong since it's digital. this should look almost like a planar drawing of a head, and might not really resemble the person at all so you gotta have some confidence that you're going alright (that comes from the practice on objects). not committing to any detail here, scars and eyelids and strands of hair and shit come later. 5 more mins drop some values on, I decided to use a really clumsy annoying brush for some reason. Still keeping it light, if you've got major mistakes shading in your zones will make them more apparent and you can still fix em on paper. 5 more mins in More of that, working smaller areas, going darker, suggesting more detail. 10 more mins ish started putting in proper detail and accents, depending on the style you're working in this could take a while but this is obv pretty rough so there wasn't too much to do. stopped at this point because I saw the eyes were going a bit wonky, pushed them around a little bit and kept going. 5 more mins finished the detail pass, grabbed some other brush and darkened where I didn't want the light showing through the other marks. Another 15 I guess came out fairly accurate - http://i.gyazo.com/931ba0386cfec7628464e362d3d17581.gif the likeness is a touch off but I'm okay with that usually, matters to me more in a painting than a drawing. if you wanna post something similar next time you try a portrait, might be able to give you more specific advice.
Perfect example of shit I'm bookmarking for this compilation. If anyone has any posts like this bookmarked, please send them my way for the collection.
Really need to get good at digi painting, I think the problem is that theres just no tactile feedback, so i kind of loose what Im doing. Anyway, help? 20-30 mins [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/lsMo74N.png[/img_thumb]
let people trace, the only people they're hurting are themselves. also, don't think tracing is "practice". It's not. None of my teachers have ever given out an assignment were we have had to trace to learn.
I think tracing is alright as long as people are upfront about it. Just say that you traced it. If you don't want to mention that it's traced because people will like it less, then don't trace. Tracing is not good for developing drawing skills, and it's not even your work in the end, but it's good for creating graphics and mockups in a more commercial world, especially in design. It's just a technique, but if its only purpose is to re-create something already made then what is the point? It's already made, why bother tracing? Unless you want it in a higher resolution or actually change the style and expression (think; photomanipulation) there isn't much of a point to it.
I've used tracing once or twice when I've been making a Christmas present for somebody and my observational drawing skills were at a level where it would have taken too long to draw by eye. Sometimes you find yourself on a job doing something that does require a shortcut. But they're right - you don't learn much at all by tracing. You might learn a little bit about colour and value when you're doing the colour picking, but if all one can do is trace then originality isn't going to exist

they have the right to post here still. Not everyone is training to become an illustrator or animator. But if they are they are shooting themselves in the foot by tracing
If they're just starting off, tracing could get them used to the feel and motions of drawing. Sure it doesn't help towards technical skill but it can certainly make you more comfortable.

I've been learning a lot from tracing tbh, even when I only use it for one technique [editline]8th February 2015[/editline]
and still haven't lol
how pretentious can you get? Whoa how did you make those? ^
Extensive experimentation in After Effects and Maya. These are basically me messing around with raytracing in Maya. I'm not sure if I've mentioned it before, but I can't remember the last time I used a tutorial. Probably my loss, but whatever. I think it's entertaining to find my own solutions.
Has anybody used Mischief? I downloaded the demo and it's using almost all my resources :suicide:

I can sketch up something basic (or not so basic) and just pan to the side and start something else, my Mischief documents end up looking like pages from a random sketchbook and I love it
I rarely ever draw, but I do occasionally spend 10-20 hours on tracing photos I've taken myself. I don't thnk that tracing amounts to nothing. It has helped me with understanding colors/gradients better over the years. This is the last trace I did. [t]http://i.imgur.com/mOQHZ5Y.png[/t]
Honestly I steered away from tracing pretty early on. If I ever wanted to do hyper-realistic stuff I would just grid it, although sometimes I dont even grid and I just sort of go at it with just an initial sketch. Never uploaded the finished version of this but its one where I just made a sketch and then sort of went at it. it ended up kind of wobbly but it was still ok.
I'm at a loss as to why anybody would do spend their time doing this
Personally I did it as a small personal time waste project. I love spending nights tracing and listening to good music. I've traced tons of cars in the past, and I just wanted to try it out again. For example, I made this trace so I had a bare body with clean colors to work on, when making a racing livery for the raceteam I work on. there was a huge community for vector guns and cars back in the day called coflash. who knows what became of it but i really enjoyed doing gun vectors as detailed as i could. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1482927/1911.png
