Homework for design class.

Making things work in indesign took way more time than I expected, so the left side was rushed way more than i wanted it to be. If I didn't start on this 3 hours before deadline, then i would've added age rating, specs etc.

Always wondered how people manage to get all those tiny details look or "work" together, I've tried looking at lots of mechanisms to study but at the end of the day it's usually "wtf am i looking at". This is dope though!

Paint the silhouette, put a photo over it, then "create clipping mask". Doing this with multiple photos and scaling/rotating really helps add tons of details quickly. Then Filter>Noise>Median>2 or 3 px to take the sharpness out of the photos, then spend a few hours painting over them to tie them all together

I actually think I butchered this, but I feel like this is a good 'give up and fix it later' point
I'd say more of a "scrap and start over when you've worked more on the fundamentals" type of image. Work with bigger brushes, get more practice blending efficiently (and again with bigger brushes), don't try to copy the reference image pixel for pixel (it's pretty blatant) and practice seeing hair as a cluster of forms rather than individual strands. Lastly once you've done that another important step is to view the image as a whole composition with a focal point- and divert your attention to brushstroke size/density. The focal point(s) in the image generally feature more detailed brushwork to help direct the viewer's attention, while the background will be less detailed- not only with the size and density of brushwork but also contrast in value. Composition also factors in but since this appears directly lifted from a screengrab of the show it isn't as relevant.
Anyways sorry if it sounds like I'm being really negative, but this post really gets to me because this post basically looks exactly like where I started with digital painting- until I realized I was cheating myself and went back to the literal drawing board and have spent the last few months practicing with paper and pencil until I eventually feel like I can work up to more ambitious pieces like what you've chosen. It's fine to tackle something big now and again since it's often a lot more fun, but just realize you aren't likely going to be developing your skills like you would with the more boring exercises like anatomy, still lifes, etc etc etc, and instead you'll be focusing more on how to replicate your reference than the processes that would allow you to create a wholesome image.
So anyways, don't take my criticism personally, I just want you to make sure you aren't taking any cheap shortcuts to get results instead of develop skills. And hey, if I'm wrong and you genuinely did this without a 'reference' or just by looking at photos of the actor and the gun, congrats to you and I apologize.
eons since I've posted anything but here are some quickie faces

life size skeleton. I tried to get the measurements and everything down as accurately as possible and really went for some nice line work, which my figure drawing teacher really seemed pleased with. (and yeah I fucked up with starting too low and the feet go off the page, sadly I couldn't really fix that at the point I was at)
C&C if you'd like! it's always appreciated. Also, I've been too nervous to C&C other people until recently, so if you guys have anything to say about what I've been saying, I'd be gad to hear that, too. :-)

Finally got around to using the risograph printer at uni, I love how the prints look and the whole process is really hands on, no computers or anything (unless you count a digital printer)
Round 2 of prints I'm going to redo the whole face, it'll be a great little projec to record and document.

I don't recall there having been a pet discussion or aquarium thread before, would anyone be interested if I were to put something together?
Had a bit of downtime last night and moved my Xenopus laevis into her new aquarium. I'm new to the aquascaping hobby, but it's incredibly interesting as a creative outlet.
Right now I'm trying to challenge myself to draw things I would otherwise not by drawing a short comic of sorts(or just do some environment studies) and I'm going to go on a small field trip around the city and some shops to capture the feel of locations.
Is there anything I should keep in mind or do during my trip that could help me when I try to emulate these locations in my drawings?
If you want them to be accurate then it's essential to plot out bigger dimensions to cut up into small ones - e.g. drawing a big rectangle for the outline of a complete shop front say, making sure the proportion is as right as you can make it, then measuring within that for window divisions and so forth. In this way you can get the part where you sweat over accuracy over with pretty quickly while only dealing with a handful of basic shapes inside and around each other - then when you get down to the details you can rough them in rapidly and still have a really good looking sketch because you've got an accurate structure under there and it'll all look correct.
At least I advise you to rough smaller things in quickly because in my experience you can't usually sit down in streets lined with shops so you may well be standing drawing among a steady flow of people which is a little bit draining
