there was a huge community for vector guns and cars back in the day called coflash. who knows what became of it but i really enjoyed doing gun vectors as detailed as i could.

I remember you from CoFlash. We were this little community of nerds who did nothing but tracing photos.
I'm at a loss as to why anybody would do spend their time doing this
if you can't understand the applications of vector graphics then they clearly aren't for you
I remember you from CoFlash. We were this little community of nerds who did nothing but tracing photos.
yeh. it was fun though!
Vector tracing has a huge benefit, especially in a commercial application.
It's good for animations (motion graphics), huge-ass posters (print) and flexibility (as seen by Ferosso's decal designs)
I think tracing is easy to put down by beginners and amateurs in art because it's easy to get stuck up in "the right way" of doing things. Instead of seeing it as a tool and technique for achieving specific results they just see it as "cheating" and "unauthentic". Much like calling erasers, compasses, light-boards, grids and rulers cheating tools.
It's just another means to an end and has it's own applications. It's certainly not good for learning how to draw, but learning how to draw is just one of many goals.
Tracing something you've photographed yourself is also very good because it means it actually is your work, you chose the subject and the composition, whether you photo-copy it or go wild with it, either result is your work. (whereas tracing something you found on the net is only truly yours when you've altered it so much from the thing you were tracing that they no longer are the same thing)

I think it's prob a lack of technical knowledge about light colour perspective all that that's making the result come out poorly, rather than the medium. like I don't imagine it would come out better if you did it traditionally, more likely the opposite..
;47104850']Fuck yeah Mischief is probably my favourite program for random doodles/sketching because of the infinite canvas and vector factor. I can sketch up something basic (or not so basic) and just pan to the side and start something else, my Mischief documents end up looking like pages from a random sketchbook and I love it
Is it supposed to be so resource intensive?
Tracing is also a good way to figure out how to contstruct something with simple forms without having to worry about proportions at the same time. It allows you to focus on learning one thing at a time
Extensive experimentation in After Effects and Maya. These are basically me messing around with raytracing in Maya.
I'm not sure if I've mentioned it before, but I can't remember the last time I used a tutorial. Probably my loss, but whatever. I think it's entertaining to find my own solutions.
Well, I meant something more in depth than that, like an insight into the process, not just which software he used. I'm not competent enough in either to work towards creating something like that myself.
Insight into the process? I suppose, but there's really not much to it.
The circular lines you see are the reflections of the inside of an outer sphere unto an inner sphere. The inner sphere is what the gif is comprised of (eg. the rest, here the outer sphere, is transparent (the render doesn't pick it up)). Lines of bright, luminescent material are "painted" onto the outer sphere and given a combination of different deformers, which gives them a wavy/pulsating pattern. The rest of the work consists of colouring and various other post-processing effects that create the laser-like aesthetic.
I don't usually stick to one visual style and I try not to get bogged down in one aspect of production, leading to a wildly inconsistent quality and style. It's a double-edged sword.
If there's anything else you (or anyone else) want to ask me about, don't hesitate.
edit: lest i forget

Ive been doing daily drawings for the past week or so. Been trying to get out of this space where I end up abandoning a painting because it looks awful and it never sees the light of day. Here's a few I've done for the past few days.
Sorry if the sizes are messed up, I can't really see how big they really are on my phone.
Has anybody used Mischief? I downloaded the demo and it's using almost all my resources :suicide:
Hmm, yeah I downloaded the free trial since I had been thinking about trying it out anyway and it makes my computer shit itself using up 100% of all the cores and making everything stutter and slow down. And that is just by opening the program, with nothing on the canvas or anything. If I set the affinity to not use all 4 cores then it doesn't make everything stutter and shit itself, but still it uses 100% of the cores that I let it use. And it is basically just a frozen program. I dunno shit doesn't seem to work.
I rarely ever draw, but I do occasionally spend 10-20 hours on tracing photos I've taken myself.
I don't thnk that tracing amounts to nothing. It has helped me with understanding colors/gradients better over the years.
This is the last trace I did.

Given the context in which this work would be used I feel it is better suited to the graphic design thread

What is your setup like? Like your OS and CPU/GPU Also on their website it says that it makes use of your graphics card to help speed drawing up, so I don't see how it would need 100% of my processor to sit in a blank document that was created just by opening the program
always wanted to be able to do cartoons, so I've decided to learn with the power of the interweb!
My first ever cartoon!

Also I dont believe you can change hotkeys in Mischief? Which imo is annoying as shit

Yeah idk, I think some shit is wrong with the program. I mean I already figured I should be able to run everything perfectly considering I just built this computer near the end of last year.

as far as i can tell:
a guy with really stubby arms and 3 fingers with virtually no elbow and the right arm actually being a haybale in disquise
with a scarf that's not put on correctly and just kind of draping around his neck/back
wearing a trenchcoat with rolled up sleeves and some kind of "asian conical hat" that looks like a potato
there's also a single lone "wind strand" coming out from underneath his 2nd arm
and he's punching someone really hard, so much so that it breaks the ground and kicks up massive clouds of dust as the person tumbles into the background

Alternatively it's Moses.
Honest question; is it really -that- bad to start drawing using a tablet? I've been wanting to pick drawing up again and doing some small studies but I really cba to draw on paper. I much prefer to use the photoshop brushes so I can put down big blobs of black and white and quickly shape something
Tbh same, I don't really have the pocket money for extra paper and supplies
I'm new to this character design thing

The tablet is disconnected, weird, and clumsy until you know what you are doing. You'll likely be covering up serious mistakes with textured brushes and airbrush crap in the beginning.
If you absolutely 100% will not be persuaded to use pencil and paper, then please only use the hard round brush. No soft brushes, no textured brushes. Don't allow yourself to try and hide mistakes with fancy tools. The result will be mediocre and won't help you get better.
Honestly though, pencil and paper is so much easier. You have a 1-1 relationship with the paper and the pencil. You are physically controlling the deposit of graphite onto the paper and there is no disconnect there at all. Using an eraser is also far, far easier than fucking around with layers and shit like that.
I strongly urge you to use pencil and paper. Don't get shitty pencils and erasers. I recommend Staedtler HB pencils, Staedtler mars eraser and an A4 or larger sketch pad.
