I was wondering: how many of you guys been actually paid to do digital art before (or (want to) do it for a living)? What are your stories?
edit: stories as in how/why you started out, where you are now and where you want to ideally be
Well let me just say one thing on the subject, experience trumps fucking everything except the skill of the work itself. Get a job in the area you wanna work in and if you can't get a job in it, get an internship. 4 + years of experience doing the job as an internship with 4 years of college can land you a position over someone who has a higher degree if the final product is similar.

idk if i'm stupid or if she looks a bit cross-eyed. Doesn't really look like she's focusing on anything much further from her hand.
I hope you don't mind that I touched it a bit but I feel like this is sort of what you were going for?

Made some race art for Star Ruler 2's upcoming expansion yesterday. Forgot to record the parts leading up to the finished base - but I did capture all the polishing I did to it afterwards.
Timelapse, if you want to watch me paint (very very fast).

I made a polycount thread on that archway diorama I said I was doing. So ill just C+P the description fron there. Hope thats cool.
Got more of a scene concepted. Still not sure If I'm happy with the content as it is, I think I want to add more, but I'm not really sure what. The background has done a good job for filling the space and I'm wondering how much particle effects will come into play when it comes to filling it more.
For reference, Ill be aiming to have some light rain fall and some falling leaves.
Although i do think more contextual items would be good.
Also, if you want to follow the thread or give crit on PC, then here it is. :)

Actually rather satisfied for what started as a quick doodle, will definitely flesh it out later and add some spaceships or so.

looks pretty good, if anything the leg on his left looks like it's not lined up properly with the other leg. The legs currently are like if the character is facing directly forward but the rest of the body are rotated to his right
thats just my opinion thou

I think you need to change your colours a bit - oceans tend to be a darker blue with a bit of green to it rather than shades of chroma-key blue/bordering on purple. It would also help to throw some warmer colours into the land, both in the deserts and vegetated areas.
The clouds also look a little too sketchy imo (try a different brush) and they look like they're far too high above the surface; it's especially noticeable on the horizon. Unless this is the size of Pluto, they're going to look far closer to the surface since you're viewing it on such a scale. The bottom of the cloud layer, at a minimum, is usually about 2km from the surface or sea level. Your clouds look like they start in the upper 30% of the atmosphere, not the bottom 10%.
I think your landforms look pretty nice though!

Thanks! As always, I would recommend the ctrlpaint series on this, but the short version is: making a loose underdrawing with wide brushes on one layer to establish gesture and proportion (something I definitely have trouble with) and then doing precise confident lines over it. Adding line weight totally helps too!

That's true, I haven't looked at much opportunities around here (especially since I'm still in uni studying completely unrelated stuff) and I have to get much better at the same time.
What's interesting is that art skill seems to play much less of a role for non-studio freelance work (such as patreon/tumblr commissions) and it's a lot more reliant on marketing and promoting yourself as an artist rather being a good one in the first place. It creates a big dissonance for me: on one hand there's graphs on how there's a very little percent of art-for-a-living people getting an actual art-related job and lots of professionals claiming that the industry is very competitive; on the other hand there's a ton of people making decent money off of deviantart commissions and the like.

For some reason after drawing up some poses that i decided to turn it into some sort of Femme Fatale. Why? I dunno myself, but why the fuck not?

Yeah, i have no idea how to do Skin tone or colouring in general. This is the first time i've touched anything other than Black and White for a very long time. I do feel like i'm making some progress with drawing though.
You are tackling too much at once, which is the most common mistake we'll see with newer artists. I usually write up a huge paragraph, but the skinny is this: Drawing stuff like what you've done is fine just for fun, but if you want to seriously improve you're going to have to do exercises focusing on specific fundamentals- line, perspective, anatomy (which isn't as bad as the other aspects of your drawing bad excepting the face), value, color blending, etc. Draw still lifes, practice perspective, do anatomy studies, etc if you want to hone in on specific skills and improve as quickly as possible. You'll still get better doing what you're doing, but it's going to much quicker if you do the less fun stuff first.
I setup my artstation profile, and I realized that I do a lot of random crap outside of work...

This would really benefit from more definition on the skull and rimlights on the hand/sword area. Really cool interpretation of Papyrus though.

Its hard to even focus on making better art when nobody around where i live gives a shit if i make better art, or doesnt even know what the fuck concept art is, and even your mother doesnt give a shit either...
:(
I try my best to study and focus, but the fucking procrastination and barely anybody around me giving me critiques or not caring just makes it impossible, christ i wish i was at college right now, thank god im a senior. But Jesus Christ the wait is agonizing.
Been flexing my fabrication muscles for an upcoming anime convention in Raleigh at the end of May, been a lot of fun! Huge learning process so far, probably put in well over 60 hours of work into it so far, this is just the chest piece here, rest of it still needs to actually be made.
