Been feeling gloomy past two weeks, barely have gotten anything done.
At least I managed to sketch something, for a change.
So I've been forcing myself to draw again, trying some sharpie colouring and inkwell/feather complementation. Been so long tho that honestly I'm not even sure if it's any good.

also,
I thought I would update you guys and let you know that my portfolio made it through the selective reviews and I've been accepted into the animation program at my college!

Yay! Where are you studying? I just finished my art course this is super fun to see people just entering the field.
I'm also gunna assume he used AI or just PS? It looks fantastic though; really nice usage of colour in it; I had to put it on my inspiration board I liked it so much, congrats Jaanus you made it to the equivalent of my fridge.
Here's a quick little Doom-inspired doodle guy. Been really digging the new game

Quick and dirty work in Sketch (http://sketchapp.com)
It's much quicker and intuitive to use than illustrator but not really meant for doing illustration work (It's mostly for UI/UX design)
weird alien thing I did for a warmup

Inspired by a doodle made by my Mom, apparently it's a car. I thought it was cute so I expanded on it and then committed to a shaded drawing.

I'm at Ball State University in Indiana! They're a pretty good school, I think, even though I really don't like the city they're in. The school itself is lovely and they have a wonderful animation program, it's extremely competitive and you have to apply and submit your portfolio (with a bunch of work from your freshman classes, but mainly your figure drawing class) at the end of your freshman year and they only take in so many people. So it was a wonderful feeling to be accepted after all of my hard work this year!

I like the abstract stuff going on, but I'd say it might be too abstract. It looks good, and the forms are there but I think it could be more recognizably a creature. Being able to tell where the eyes, limbs, etc are is an important part of a design
Here's a couple things I'm working on at the moment, I think I need to do more environments but hopefully I'll have a chance to do a few in the next couple of months.

While your work is amazing, I extremely disagree with your advice. It's an alien, and aliens can be things we can't even imagine. They can eat through their feet, for example, and have perception organs that are completely different from ours. Drawing recognizable stuff is as important as drawing something out-of-this world completely. Depends on the context. I would use your art for the next Stalker, but Headcrab54's for the next half life.

Or you can risk falling into the generic hole like most of the high-end industry artists. They have amazing skill but rarely put up new ideas, either by their numbed artistic sense over the years, or their bosses wishes.

Sudden struck of an inspiration, it goes better towards the end. I've getting my hold on piano again. This is a complete real time improvisation and the audio is raw without any corrections or post processing. This was a one shot recording so there are some errors. I hope you still enjoy.
What do you think? It's the second piano impro i've ever recorded properly. I'm self-taught (I did go to piano lesson when I was like 10 but never really liked it and never learnt even reading notes).

I know and I agree. One of my favorite artists is Wayne Barlowe, who's known for producing things surreal and unimaginable. But when designing you want something your audience can relate to at least a little bit.
The Flocking Floater for example has a bat wing, a plant like antenna, and a man o' war for the rest of it's body. It's easy to assume how they work based on their structure and being able to discern how a creature works at a first glance is important.
It's important to design a creature with intent and purpose, rather than just being weird for the sake of being weird.
Edit:
Anyways I take back what I said, it's just a sketch, it can be weird for the sake of being weird. It''s just important to think about this sort of thing when aiming to expand your portfolio for a professional audience

Mmm... dutch gables and mansard rooves. (I'm in my master's of architecture and I love it if that gives my compliment any more legitimacy.)
Did a thingy

Decent brushwork on the 1st, you just need to get a bit smaller brushwork to refine details like the eyes and mouth.

Oh, no, it's my own stuff/storyline. I wanted to create something of a backstory for a comic I've been working on for the past year.
But sweet, I got a new show to watch :D

Ah, I see. Something very similar to the picture happens in one of the novels, so I thought it's no coincidence :v:
