If you're not at the industry standard by the time you get out of school, you're fucked. or in my case, I have to go back to Norway.
You say that like going to Norway is a bad thing.
it is if I spent thousands of dollars on an education in the US to train to get accepted into an animation studio in Californa, but instead end up in Norway working at a gas station. I might go back to Norway anyway, but I don't want the reason to be that I couldn't get a job here.
It's not about that, it's the fact that art students have to get a job when they graduate, if not, no money!
As if this doesn't apply to any other profession. Also, don't be so dramatic. Even if this studio won't accept you (and i believe they will), there are many ways for a skilled artist like you to get money. Freelance, patreon and all this kind of stuff. I understand it's not as fascinating as working in a professional team on an interesting project, but it's still better than a gas station and can work out well as a temporary option.

If US visas work the same as NZ visas, once your study is over you have a set amount of time to find a job in your field otherwise you get sent home
In US, you have 12 months to apply for OPT upon graduation, then you need to find a L1 or H1B sponsor within this 12 months period. Ps. I graduated from US and found a job in Ireland.
Yeah, i got it. I'm just saying that even if this studio won't work out, there are still many options for a good artist apart from working at a gas station.
blast from the past
Now we just need the mouse, the grunge posters, and the deer boy... :p [editline]16th February 2015[/editline]
Yeah, i got it. At Pixars or Dreamwork for instance... even I got one. just need to attend their recruitment session and make a good impression to get an onsite interview.

Having a successful Patreon requires you to already have a large fan base (of which there isn't really a lot of reliable ways to build, some ideas to help but realistically it comes down to luck), and even then generally doesn't work as a main source of income just a supplement. Patreon also requires you to set up a reward system, giving out free or discounted work in exchange for consistent income, as well as having something people will want to pay per update for, so basically the only actually good Patreon campaigns I see on a regular basis are comics or porn, or porn comics.
Also, most companies only hire artists as contractors anyways. to bexome an in-house artist woth visa sponsorship, one needs a lot of relationship building beyond skills. A professional artist does not imply the skill he or she posseses, but the depth of knowledge and the amount of people he or she knows.

we really need a 'spooky' rating
it is if I spent thousands of dollars on an education in the US to train to get accepted into an animation studio in Californa, but instead end up in Norway working at a gas station. I might go back to Norway anyway, but I don't want the reason to be that I couldn't get a job here.
Hey, I know how you feel. University was a last minute thought for me. Art wasn't even a hobby so I never drew in my spare time, ever. Now I'm on an Art & Animation course, surrounded by amazing artists, given the task of being the only artist in a game dev team and I still can't draw and don't spend time doing it at home because of other work and lack of motivation. Sure my aim is VFX but it's a difficult position to be in. You're good man, relax. Keep working and by the time you graduate you'll be able to get a job. Even if you start off at a small, crappy studio, that's still something. You don't go straight from graduation to your dream job even if you are qualified enough. In almost every case (and this applies to other professions) you'll have to start from either the bottom or the midground (if you're really good) and eventually work your way up o your dream job. Stick at it and you'll get there.
Now we just need the mouse, the grunge posters, and the deer boy... :p
Not to worry, I made a short comic last semester on 24 hour comic book day based on teen deer read the whole thing here http://detkef.deviantart.com/gallery/37256401/Teen-deer?offset=0 [editline]16th February 2015[/editline] the pages are lacking quality because I spent 24 hours drawing 24 pages.

Can someone make a nice 16x16 brain icon for me? Preferably in blue-ish colours? It's used for the intelligence attribute in my game I made one, but I'm not that happy with it. Doesn't look much like a brain. I'll put you in the credits if I use your icon :D

Updates on hair, hope it doesn't look like sausages this time... C&C welcome.
The hair is amazing but I can't help to think of when I see those teeth. Perhaps... simplify them? I don't know.
The teeth almost fall on the horizontal rule of 3rds line, a little above it I think, but they do fall on the vertical one. Perhaps that is why you are drawn to them [t]http://puu.sh/g06Ip/b0b843820f.jpg[/t]

I want to focus on the smile, but not the teeth... :(
Any suggestion composition wise? or will simplification do the trick. I want to focus on the smile, but not the teeth... :(
Well I assume it is a WIP, so I can't say for sure, but I think once more stuff becomes more detailed then they won't stand out so much as "wow these teeth are so detailed" since they were fleshed out first. Also just a thing that may not apply in all cases, is if there is something/someone facing in a certain direction then it is generally a good idea to have more breathing room in front of them than behind them like here is just some random example thing (Tip #2) [t]https://cdn.tutsplus.com/photo/uploads/2013/11/benlucas_portrait_cropping_04.jpg[/t] If the frame is close to the front of a subject it can create tension

Don't render individual strands, make the hair one mass that has both soft and hard edges, and just make a few strands stand out so it hints at a texture http://ilikeyoursensitivity.deviantart.com/art/1487-271857441 this person does it well, they're grouping the masses of hair together and letting some of the edges be lost and fading, making it look soft.
weird new shading should i keep it y/n
an image just popped into my head... some sketching and 5 minutes in photoshop later [t]http://i.imgur.com/RkEJOGz.png[/t] [editline]holy shit thats big[/editline] I forgot how huge the image was OMG! Thumbnailed.

if that example seems too soft for you, here is another example of well done hair http://davidrapozaart.deviantart.com/art/April-O-Neil-202996505 as you can see hes losing the details in the shadow and bringing it out where it matters, making it look very realistic. [editline]17th February 2015[/editline] and I would not make style an excuse
