if that example seems too soft for you, here is another example of well done hair
http://davidrapozaart.deviantart.com/art/April-O-Neil-202996505
as you can see hes losing the details in the shadow and bringing it out where it matters, making it look very realistic.

and I would not make style an excuse
you can do what ever you want for style, that's what's great about art. Not really an excuse
fine.
though I have to say I love the hair in that pic

fuck merge, that was fast

So I only popped in here to upload that image. Apparently there's a discussion about drawing hair right now? Well one of the most important things is the shading.

This image almost makes me feel that her hair is made of plastic, it kinda seems to be shaded that way. Disregard my black and white image, that's a different style of art.

That's pastel looking hair, presumably a different art style.

That's beautiful hair, also shiny. If you're looking for realistic hair, that's a good example.
SIRIUS makes a very important point. You can draw your hair however you want to, it's your art, it's your style, don't change it just to make people like it.

The problem is that this thing on maya's picture doesn't even look like hair to me. Absolutely no offence, but the strands are so solid it almost looks like she hasn't washed her hair for like months or something. This has nothing to do with style, hair just doesn't work this way.

I think it's more of the fact how the hard shading clashes so much with how everything else is shaded in the drawing rather than having to do with how hair works
Maya's hair is way overworked and doesn't look like hair
I think Maya's hair has it's own merit, I just think it takes too much attention.
I don't think the way the hair is stylized is the main problem, it's rather how everything else is stylized in comparision to it. (as in, I don't think there is a problem with drawing hair in that way, it just doesn't work here)
The hair is much more cartoonish, in that specific image it could probably just be copy pasted onto Lina in DotA2 and it would fit. Given that everything else goes for a realistic look it stands out too much.
Just look at how smoothly the face is shaded, then BAM the hair is shaded strand by strand. The hair is also very well lit in the sections where the face is loosing light, which is especially odd given the giant hat. There seems to be a missmatch of values there (hair and face), even whilst considering the fact that some of the hair obviously reaches further out than the face catching more light.
Making equipable items

Bronze, Iron, Steel, Mithril, Crystal (maybe just say 'fuck it' and go with Malachite?) and Obsidian(or demonic?)
They're essentially item tiers, so only high level characters can use the last helmet etc.
Thank you all for the C&C on the hair!
Didn't mean to stir up an argument, haha.
I guess there is something up with my inconsistent style across the image.
I'll see what I can do to blend :)
cheers!
Heyo. Not dead. What's with this GD biz?
Anyway, here's some multicolor moody WIPs.

Tried blending and cropped out finished section, I don't think hair and teeth stick out as much.
Maybe I should just leave her like this, cropped D:

Something about those teeth throws me off.
Like their size or angle. Maybe her lips are too thin? Just something about the mouth looks odd.
I dont see why you guys keep pickin the teeth
Idk maybe I'm weird but they look fine to me haha
with the level of criticism i can give all i can say is
that smile looks totally forced
It's because the face is simplified and stylized while the teeth aren't. In general, teeth should be toned considerably down to avoid it looking creepy. esp on soft girl portraits

I really want to know how dgg can make paragraphs of something I said in a single sentence.
Am I just bad at English?
some people just like to elaborate on things
Seems like I need to do more expression studies :S
also, I did not ref hair or face, but I ref the teeth... perhaps that is the reason. I do not usually draw teeth, so I cannot freehand teeth.

I feel you bro. Faces are my #1 worst enemy when it comes to drawing. There's so much picking and choosing between what is there and what we expect I have a really hard time with it as well.

You're welcome?
Yall niggas are tearing apart maya's hair but I fuckin love it. Doesn't look correct, but it looks cool. Cooler than any of the examples of how it "should" be done that people were posting.
I like it too. I think that if something is love or hate, that's usually a good thing. If everyone hates something, it's shit. If everyone loves something, it's boring. If there's divided opinion, it's interesting.
They aren't hating it, they are trying to help him make it better. There is a difference between, "that looks shit m8," and, "the hair still looks too harsh, hair should look soft. Don't render individual strands, make the hair one mass that has both soft and hard edges, and just make a few strands stand out so it hints at a texture."
One gives no insight at all to learn from, and the other does.

Maya also said C&C was welcome.

not tearing it apart, we're giving critique so he can improve it. Maya still has a lot to learn like all of us, and while his stylistic choices might be a personal preference in style, you have to learn the rules before you can break them.
