No idea what it is... but I like it
Any programming or overall suggestions for someone with shakey hands? Like, if I'm drawing on paper, I'm generally alright but when I use a tablet, I find it very hard to draw a smooth curve which means I usually have to do stuff with lots of little strokes which can be messy
I've turned off pressure sensitive settings since my stuff would look kinda weird with it
sai has settings so you can set up a pretty strong stabilizer
I would highly recommend SAI if you're looking for smooth lines and such. Photoshop of course has the better custom brushes but SAI is perfect for putting linework on sketches. The watercolour brush is also very nice - it's like a nicer version of Photoshop's mixer brush.

The mouse smoothing is very similar to Zbrush's lazymouse feature if you've ever used that.

Never tried this before, but it seems pretty sweet.
Sai's stroke smoothing is shit hot
It makes me want to learn whatever scripting language PS uses so I can get something similar in Photoshop
You could just use LazyNezumi.
Oh right, thanks for all this! I have been using Sai already so I'll mess around with some settings
Yeah, I think composition helps a lot...
Played around with it a little bit:

I think I've improved from these ones a lot:
I feel like her upper teeth are sticking out too much from mouth and they seem just a little too big.
I blame my mom...
My mom, my sister, and I all have big and protruding upper teeth... now I am brainwashed to think that it's normal...
They aren't hating it, they are trying to help him make it better. There is a difference between, "that looks shit m8," and, "the hair still looks too harsh, hair should look soft. Don't render individual strands, make the hair one mass that has both soft and hard edges, and just make a few strands stand out so it hints at a texture."
One gives no insight at all to learn from, and the other does.
[editline]18th February 2015[/editline]
Maya also said C&C was welcome.
The examples that were being provided on how the hair could be improved were also stylistically completely at odds with what Maya is doing. Personally, I think softening the values up and grouping masses together are the last things it needed. The whole draw for me was that it's not rendered how hair is typically rendered, and it hits hard visually.
My suggestion for making it easier to look at would be to homogenize the hues more across the board. I like the earlier iterations before the blues were introduced to the dark areas of the hair. It worked with her warmer face.
For the record, I don't actually believe any of you hate the decisions that were made, I just question if your criticisms for this case in particular come from a greater technical knowledge or if it comes from being in a comfort zone for so long after seeing a bunch of artists choosing to stylize something the same way. Many of us are training to be in this commercially. Are you sure you're not being taught that a stylistic compromise is outweighed by technical accuracy by artists who've had everything unique about them sanded away by years of being in various entertainment industries that are focused on satisfying the expectations of consumers who still see in symbols? I am projecting here a bit. This is my greatest fear. I look at old early high school sketchbooks and go "god damn this is badly done but I never would have had this cool ass idea today"
Detlef, in my honest opinion, Maya's portrayal of hair is no more technically incorrect/ inaccurate than those large soft sheeny masses portrayed in the examples you posted. None of it looks quite like hair. All of it reads as hair.
I'll have to disagree with you again, but if Maya wants to paint like that it's fine.
But tbh he asked for critique, and I gave it, I think he can decide for himself if he wants to take it or not.

This one is better tho, it has a consistent style and the hair doesn't take all the attention from the face, and the clothes are better rendered
A little space roaming character for fun.

is it just me or are those arms a tad small?
Bit late to the discussion but to me the front teeth look like they're too far to the left. Especially when you look at the top lip, they seem off centre. Other than that it's very nice.
Yall niggas are tearing apart maya's hair but I fuckin love it. Doesn't look correct, but it looks cool. Cooler than any of the examples of how it "should" be done that people were posting.
detlef's examples were from much more accomplished artists and pretty obviously far better. I don't even like Rapoza's piece but it doesn't matter, that's still the case. and re: your other post, you prob don't have the eye for it tbh, but the examples posted read as hair. They're painted according to how hair looks. Maya's hair doesn't read as hair, it reads like strands of hardened toffee or something. It's the wrong surface treatment. Even if you do like his approach you should admit he has a long way to go in developing it to make it better. The thing about crit like that from someoen who knows what they're on about is that it's not to guide him into a different style, it's about showing him valuable things that he can apply to his own work to improve it. defending someone with "it's their style" or especially saying someone can paint X however they like is a retarded contribution, ofc they can it's fucking tacit let's leave that dumb platitude behind

I did ask for C&C, and I appreciate input from Detlef, Mako, xalender, Jallen, and others a lot. I do need them to improve.
However, unless I interpretative your comment wrongly... if you are just gonna think of stuff to mock... then save your energy and fk'off...

The top one is nice, were you were going for a strange or ill looking figure? If so i think pushing some more oddity into the anatomy might have worked well.
Fuckin' around with filters in photoshop.

Your brushwork on that chimp is magic. Do you have a deviantart?
Does anyone know where I can learn (or maybe you know how to :o) how to do these kinds of repeating sort of fractal patterns with clips in either Sony Vegas or After Effects?
(What I'm talking about is the pink stuff that starts at 0:33 and lasts for like a second)

It's a kaleidoscope - you never played with one as a child? - here's a video that covers it.
Don't know about fractals but it shouldn't be too hard to find or make something to come out with the effect you want.
