In my opinion, a lot of Feng's work suffers for it. Most of his work comes off very messy and muddy to me.
I think his work can look messy, but that's more about his somewhat scribbly style and the way he layers textures than the way he controls his opacity. I don't think I've ever considered his work to be "muddy"...
The example he goes on to show in the 2nd part of that video of why you shouldn't use pressure opacity is just silly.

It's on par with those exaggerated spilling things gifs

The incorrect and sloppy use of any technique will obviously yield sloppy work.
yet, that cube looks a, lot like 70% of the work in this thread
[editline]23rd February 2015[/editline]
you might say hes just being sloppy, but does that mean that most people here are just sloppy too?
-snip- (old post)
i have to agree with detlef on this tbh. guys just please stick to pen pressure if you don't have full mastery over what you're doing. it's just going to cut you a lot of frustration specially in the beginning stages.
I'm listening to Crystal Castles in a dark room and I pretty much stared at that for a good 5 minutes.
Have another one, my one-man fanbase.

Just a little graphics design project. Since its a high school class we don't have tablets so i couldn't go all out on it. I am still proud of it and it is based off of song of the sea.
I did ask for C&C, and I appreciate input from Detlef, Mako, xalender, Jallen, and others a lot. I do need them to improve.
However, unless I interpretative your comment wrongly... if you are just gonna think of stuff to mock... then save your energy and fk'off...
I swear I meant that genuinely! There's a lot to be said about little tiny things that seem to imply some kind of backstory, I'm really sorry if it came off as shit eating :(
Your work looks to have a lot of the the same techniques as maloof, a lot of your colors are muddy.
Now speaking to anyone interested:
I made two spheres, one where I picked fresh colors and used full opacity with pressure sensitivity
Ah gg so you use pressure sensitivity? I thought you meant full opacity brushes with no pressure opacity and I was like that sounds really fuckin hard
Tbh if you know you're colours and can see where things aren't as vibrant as they should be (or where they're too vibrant and need to be toned down) either method works. I like a painterly/wet-on-wet/visible strokes look in my work too
what paintings of mine are you referencing btw Det
To be honest,i've been using brushes with opacity less then 100% for like forever, mostly because of problems with pressure sensitivity on my tablet. I wonder if it's noticeable on my stuff (I bet it is).
I like a painterly/wet-on-wet/visible strokes look in my work too
in that case you should be using full opacity
Trying to get better at character design

Been working on a portrait of Max Payne for a while now. This is what I'm at for now. Gotta add some more colors and tones into his skin and the shadows.

the overlapping strokes muddles your colors and makes everything look unnecessary messy and it doesn't look like you have any control or thought over where your focal point is. everything has the same level finish and we don't know where to look.

you can achieve a very nice look with loose brushstrokes, but notice how this guy is handling it. He uses hard edges and smaller harder brushes where he wants us to look first, and he lets less important stuff in the corners and the sky be loose and suggestive.
What are some good books/sites that explain a lot of things like Detlef does ie. composition/digital painting tips? Im getting better at drawing/painting technique but my composition is pretty below average

I did a quick sci-fi landscape thing. I don't know what I'm doing. :v:

The arch looks wonky, but the texture and color of everything is way cool.
I think I see some kind of blurry snow too? It looks to be too far from the foreground to be so blurry and still so spotty, but also the next layer of the cave-looking structure looks far away (probably because of the hazy tint on the snow layer) and I don't know if that's how it's meant to be. I'm probably nitpicking too hard over a faint layer of snow.

Hmm I get what you mean
In that particular pic the brushwork wasn't a focus though

Are there pics of mine that where you feel I have got better brushwork?

Yeah, I actually realized all of that as I posted it and I agree 100%. Also, I forgot to do shadows for the structures. :v: I dunno what it is, but I get a regular show vibe from it for some reason. Huh.

I thought the structures had shadows, just really subtle ones because of it being outdoors and snow tends to reflect a lot of light
Would people be interested if I did a livestream?

If you look at the example I posted, it is also a very rough piece, and I doubt it took longer time than what you spent on yours.
and besides your excuses, all your pieces have the problems I pointed out.

I wasn't making excuses, I was pointing out that the piece was a colour study and that the brushwork was intentionally very lazy(?)

yes you handsome handsome mister

loose brushwork doesn't mean it has to be bad, also I did crit your colors.

you spoke about how you liked loose brushstrokes, and that pieces represents that yes?
