Earthling had a few too many, it seems.
that "one round of design" thing is a really weird way of doing business. Also I strongly advise charging people based on a measurement of time lol, not by piece. for example what if I ask for a design and then ask for a couple of small tweaks and then a couple more and so on and so forth, is there a point where you'll suddenly ask for double the price (2x "rounds of design")? or will you be measuring it out in individual dollars after the initial delivery? or will you do it at no extra cost as part of the original price of the drawings? from your pov you don't want to be doing more work than is reasonable for the asking price, and from my pov the design isn't worth anything until it's succeeding at everything I asked for.
the other thing is your approach to copyright, you should revise that, right now it looks like you're either selling the complete assignation of your copyright or "the right to print the image as much as you want non commercially" which is literally nothing lol anyone can print your pictures out
these are probably more serious considerations than you want to get into at the moment but as you get better it's good to have a grasp on this stuff, so you're not limiting yourself to the most casual penniless teenage clients or on the other hand getting fucked through the balls by somebody with a contract who wants to take advantage of your peculiar acquaintance with copyright law :v
Hey cheers!
I was going with the per-piece approach because currently I feel (maybe unjustly, I'm not sure) that I'm not experienced enough to be charging high prices, and I'm also not sure how long something might take. I don't want to charge by the hour for something that might be taking me twice as long as another designer, because the last thing I want to do is mistreat my clients. Although I guess I could ask around and find out what the reasonable number of hours per piece would be, charge for that and just absorb the excess hours myself.
Yeah my copyright is a bit weird at the moment - I'm still figuring it out. I'm actually thinking of hitting up an IP lawyer for a consultation soon. I'd much rather retain copyright of all the things I design and just sell rights for use (with the cost increasing depending on how much use they want and how exclusive said use would be) so that I don't risk losing out on a lot of money if, for instance, I do an image to inspire their novel writing and they go and use it as the book cover.
I'm working on a proper non-ugly looking website (i.e., not www.zachogan.com) and I do want to get this stuff all figured out before then.
I like how imaginative solutions you came up with! Simple yet elegant.
Are those dots stars or fireflies? Because I instantly thought of fireflies but there's a telescope there so it could be stars as well.
Cheers! It's supposed to be snow, but I didn't sell it very well. I was going for 3 different climates - grassy, cold and dry. I'm gonna replace the telescope with a more traditional lighthouse structure though - at the moment it's not selling the idea as well as it could be

a) no you're justified in feeling that
b) I know exactly what you mean, what I used to do when I did commissions for a little while like a year+ ago was just work the extra hours off the clock. honestly I think the only proper solution isn't adjusting how you charge, it's digging in your heels and getting significantly better before you resume offering your time for money. Doing commissions as you are is never going to make you even reasonable money, I advise getting a real job to live from and studying your ass off when you're not working. if you're still living at home you needn't even do very many hours a week to get on

Ok, so I need some help with smoothing an image that I'm coloring - roughly black - for practice mostly.
Let's start out pointing that I'm a noob trying to work B&W stylization and I've been mainly dropping the magic wand in Photoshop CS5 - It's my workplace pc, can't be too rigorous about the edition.

The problem is that after blackening the selected area, I'm having these rough edges issue that I could easily look for a tutorial on how to smooth them up - but I don't even know what to look for on the web.

Does anyone has any pointers regarding it?
When you have your selection still selected with the magic wand (or any other selection tool), right click.
In the menu choose "Refine Edge"
holy shit

it makes me sad that PS doesn't automatically throw anti-aliasing on some marquee/wand tool functions

it's not really same thing, marching ant selections don't accommodate feathering or any sort of effect on the image itself. in fact refining selections or masking doesn't do that either. If selection tools altered the edges in the image automatically they wouldn't be selection tools, they'd be a whole other kettle of fish, that's not the intended use for the marquee or the magic wand

So I thought these were enough for now and put em all together into a "chapter" sort of thang of the series and have already decided to make 6 more in a different style that fit together as a second chapter.
Main focus with the next 6 and also a big reason I want to start a new chapter is that previously the designs and the descriptions were almost completely random, I put little or no thought into the rock dudes their design. that and I wanted to change the style a bit.
Any feedback is welcome.

It does though. That's what the "Anti-alias" checkbox in the toolbar is for.
But it can't smooth out and make perfect edges because it's trying to make precise selections based on the the information available, which is why Refine Edge is a thing.

I'd say you need to align the titles horizontally and equalize their font sizes. This might require moving some of them, but i think it's worth it, because now their difference kinda breaks the very idea of the picture.
