Would this possibly be the place to ask for help on just getting better at drawing?
haven't really drawn anything for years but tried sketching out a character I'd been thinking of from a script I haven't written yet and I'm pretty happy with it

Gonna make a very brief return to posting work here for this uplifting story - I did a portrait of my girlfriend a couple of days ago cuz she wanted a new fb profile picture.

she put it up last night, and then when I had a look this morning:

just kidding that awesome
I met Syd Mead at Comic Con in 2012.
Got a free copy of this signed by him.

And he asked to take a photo with me in my colonial marine costume.
That was fun.

i know it's not much and it's definitely not perfect but i'm pretty happy with how this has turned out
dont look directly at the stretched texture

That looks really good. I like the tidiness you have with the smaller details.
I also think if you want to take your rendering a step further, you should start using transfer/opacity, to make your stuff look more finished.

explain?
"I dont know how to draw/where to start"
Here are some pretty basic building blocks you should learn, or at least imo from my experience in no particular order:
1. Learn anatomy. Study how people are put together and should look. Alternatively study anything else you want to draw; learn dogs anatomy if you wanna draw dogs, study forests to learn to draw forests etc.
2. Learn values and how light works. Doing greyscale paintings tends to help with this.
3. Foreshortening/motion/perspective. Basically giving your art some "pop" and better poses, avoiding characters looking stiff and boring.
4. Composition. You need to know how to actually piece together aspects of a painting; I'm really shit at explaining this so if anyone could pile on thatd be nice
5. Color theory. Fair simple; which colors look nice together and which dont?
USE REAL LIFE/PHOTOS FOR REFERENCE. YOU CAN NOT DRAW STRAIGHT FROM YOUR IMAGINATION AND EXPECT IT TO BE GOOD (unless you're already a pro in which case you dont need my haphazard advice)
Sorry for long/random post but people seem to ask constantly. Ive probably made it sound like a chore but it's really rewarding
Edit:
If you wanna start digital art just go here http://www.ctrlpaint.com theyre recommended all the time bc its a super good site. Alternatively if youre already semi decent, check out https://cubebrush.com. SUPER good community and resources/videos imo. I know it's technically 3d work and I already posted in the programming thread but I'm making a little game

right now I'm working on making a baddie so that you actually have something to bully around

I really need to do number 1 lol
I really need to do number 1 lol
Since animals are pretty much connected through evolution a lot of your anatomy can be transferred from animal to animal. Generally skeletons tend to work or are structured in the same few compositions/variations so the most work is in the beginning. If you're interested in creature design learning anatomy is really useful.

this is at once crazily oversimplified but also completely does not cover starting/learning to draw haha
Remember this guy?

This is his dog

Did you anti-alias the upscaled dog's face?
Something is weird about it, looks washed out or something.

For sure, more of a very broad "do this as you go" kinda thing

Looks like he's used the dodge tool on it, which I actually think looks correct because the screen would be slightly overexposed given the exposure levels on the rest of the object.
I think it looks right.

I'll say it's broad, you can spend your whole life trying to cover the stuff you laid out there lol

Haha true I just know too many DeviantArt retards who literally never study real anatomy/light and use the excuse "BUT IM DOING CARTOONS ITS FINE!". I should of more or less defined the post as "shit you should look into" because as for actually explaining beginning to draw Im no good at teaching or explaining

Lighting and anatomy is just stuff you have you learn to be good a artist.

Tried my hand at a walk cycle. It's alright I suppose.
I just realized I should've eased the arms at the end of their sways.

wip
The dream of one day becoming so good at drawing people assume weird anatomy is a design choice instead of "thats fuckin wrong"
I've been lowballing my composition and colour class all semester

Assignment is a colour wheel, I know its more design/drawing than colour but the teacher thought my sketches were good so here we are
study

I would thin out the lines on the plane so it would be more uniform with the rest of the drawing.
Just used oil paint for the first time. I only used palette knives, no brushes.
