Yo you guys should back this to get some cheap summer art courses. You get 2 months of classes for $40 https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/bobbychiu/schoolism-subscriptions-art-education-made-afforda

This is really cool, and Bobby Chiu's livestreams where he goes "just draw, don't expect it to be good, just keep the pencil moving" really helped me get over that "this is shit, I'm shit, fuck this shit" mental block.
e: I mean I'm still shit but at least I'm sketching something every day.
that last one is cool, is it from a game you are working on? or just a mockup
Short film. But it has no story, it's for my future portfolio that I will probably never use.
Nice composition! I think you're going in too saturated with the colours though. Also some tighter edges on the ship might be good, but I really like it overall.
Thanks! You're right about the saturation. When I started out everything I did was muddy and bland looking, now I'm starting to go into ridiculous saturation territory, made extreme by the caribbean already being quite a saturated palette. Got to bring it backwards now to normal levels :v:

Dude exact same! Everything I used to paint looked dead. Now everything looks like the 80's
hooray for monday
i haven't really had much time to focus, so i've just kinda come back to this thing for a little bit every day

I get that too - the biggest issues with my work were muddy colours (a term that is way too ambiguous and has many meanings, but in my case meant areas that should have been higher saturation than they were) and monochromatic images (or at least images where I was way over in one little sector of the colour wheel).
So I started doing only super saturated, weirdly coloured (imitating Theo Prins) things. It's important to remember that there's a time and a place for colours, and there's a time and a place for low saturation, and sometimes doing the opposite of conventional is exciting.
Does anybody else find that they don't let themselves do 'easy' compositions/perspectives (side on, etc) because they feel guilty for not pushing themselves, even though an 'easy' composition/perspective might be the best solution for whatever problem you're working on?

The biggest problem is that the scale of the buildings in the back is way off. They should be much larger. I really like the idea and the colours/rendering of this paint though!

For all the fail arguments on the internet. Inspired by Streets of Rage and feminist logic.

Your rifle guy is standing far too straight. When you're holding a rifle, you're supposed to have your torso angled pretty far into the rifle. You're also supposed to lean into the rifle.

I'm not leaning so far into the rifle here because of the scope since the scope is far higher than the iron sights, but hopefully you get the gist.
[editline]12th May 2015[/editline]
Actually, I'm looking at it a second time now, now I'm not even too sure if his torso is rotated enough for a proper pose, that or I've never really learned how to hold a rifle. His neck seems fine though.

I'm afraid not
On all counts

It looks like you lack a definite light source -- the way it looks, she is being lit from all directions pretty brightly. Some darker tones (or at least fewer lighter ones) would add a lot of depth.
Also, the blurry 3-Dish edges not a great addition, imo
otherwise, it's pretty good
Yeah the chromatic abberation is fucking with my eyes.

I'm curious if my piece is considered dumb because of old memes or because I implied that I'm not advocating for feminists. A lot can happen in these forums if you're gone a couple years, above all I hope it hasn't gone insane.

I'm looking at it again and rethinking my original reaction to it. I think the bit about feminism was stupid tbh (and that's where my dumb came from), and I think a lot of people are likely assuming it's some 5-minute edit of an existing image with filtered meme images slapped on.
If you drew all then that's neat, and if you're heading into game development/GUI design then it's good practice. Technically speaking it's a good image - the pixel art characters are solid, the font and style really captures the SNES-era aesthetic. The issue is that the subject matter is based on tired memes and the blurb is based on tired social values

I think that chromatic aberration is only appropriate in a contemporary or sci-fi setting, and only if you're trying to give the impression that the viewer is looking through a lens/camera/drone/thing. Even then it should be used carefully - it's hard to look at if used with a heavy hand and if your image is hard to look at people aren't going to look at it, which defeats the purpose.
I'd never put it on a fantasy image unless you're implying the use of a fantasy telescope or camera/iconograph or something, which is pretty rare in fantasy from what I've seen. Personally I'm more likely to try to make a fantasy image look more like a traditional painting, so for me putting chromatic aberration in it is like Rembrandt painting chromatic aberration into one of his portraits.

Thanks! Yeah the CA was mainly done in a "look what I can do" rather than if it worked with the picture or not. And that image is really useful. I need practice lighting and different material rendering.

Urgh there's this timid/awkward girl in my French class who constantly draws, but her stuff is always very very messy and scribbly (probably about the level where I started) and I don't have the heart to tell her that she's not ready to draw imaginative girls in dresses and stuff
like i don't know whether she'd be like "wow, i didn't realize it, thanks!" or "you asshole, art is my only escape" or some shit
it's not easy as though it were on a forum where it's implied that people are gonna be harsh bc they don't have to deal with the repercussions

I would imagine there isn't a huge amount of time for doing finished art-pieces in the middle of French class. Just let her doodle.
unsolicited criticism is always going to make you look like an ass
unsolicited criticism is always going to make you look like an ass
you're right, but at the same time i feel like no one who considers themselves an artist deserves to be told they're good at art and then never improve
You've gotta start with fake compliments to break the ice, and then once you're all friends you can be like "yeah, I do art too. I can give you some tips sometime if you want" and make it seem very casual like you don't really care that much.
Whether you're "right" or not, no one is going to want to hear your opinion unless they ask for it, or you give them a reason to respect your opinions (in this case establishing a rapport as a friend/nice person)
Just ask her out
