I'm not sure why but for some reason it looks better with her facing the other way to me. I can't explain it.
And brightening up the feathery thing around her neck hasn't had a positive effect imo, the focal point has been compromised.
The feathery collar looks fine in grey scale, I guess I toned up the saturation too much :/
[editline]23rd August 2015[/editline]
flipped her back, see above,
I don't why, but I kind of like her facing right...
Just curious, are you lefty or righty? I'm righty.
The one on the right with the toned down feathery collar and facing left instead of right looks a lot better to me. I'm a righty also. I guess the facing direction is probably a random preference, it shouldn't make a difference since it's a symmetrical flip but it just feels better facing left to me, can't explain that.
Whichever way you face her it's still an awesome painting.
I'll have to agree with the facing left looking better. I also don't know why.
It looks great by the way.
Living on the living room floor
broken in and breaking in
cold and wet and shaking in
someone else's residence
hoping no-one comes
rap-tap-tapping
as I hear the neighbours laughing
through the walls
hoping no one comes and opens up the door
broken the the core
greyer than a film noir
in a comic book store
brought to the fore of my mind
by a wandering thought
anxiety eases with
the fear of being caught
as the rain tap taps on the windows
as the cold wind blows
as the fireplace burns
slipping into sleep
as the knob turns

I made yet another 48 hour Ludum Dare game jam game! (this time solo)
[sp] I haven't slept in days [/sp]

if you want to try out the game for yourself you can find it here:

I'll be launching a website for my podcast The Earth Collective soon, to prepare for my September 18th interview.
I'm in need of an artist that is interested in getting their work featured not only on the website, but also get exclusively mentioned on the radio show. Is anyone interested?
[editline]24th August 2015[/editline]
Landscapes. Vehicles. Not really much people with any detail. That sort of thing. I plan to nurture this into a career, so if I find an artist that we work Good together, it might go somewhere profitable in the future. Including merchandise.
So I've been practicing drawing a bit since a last posted. Today I got in touch with another artists who offered to help critique my drawings. She challenged me to draw a cat from reference, with an image of the skeletal system to help me.
Here was my first attempt:
[t]http://pre11.deviantart.net/1af1/th/pre/f/2015/235/5/8/cat_by_roman11777-d96x7lf.jpg[/t]
awful
But today I tried again, and this time followed advice she gave me and made sure to look really really hard at my subject, and this is how it turned out.
[t]http://orig14.deviantart.net/ae25/f/2015/236/6/c/better_cat_by_roman11777-d96zlij.png[/t]
So what do you guys think? Do you see improvement, and do you have any tips to give me so I can improve even more?
I used a specific image for reference, but the link is now dead, so I can't show you unfortunately.
Unfortunately you're not likely to see a meaningful improvement across a couple of drawings. You might now do one which is worse, one that's better, one that's completely awful and one that's amazing etc. From one drawing to the next you might become da'vinci or produce a pile of shit, but the net effect across 100 drawings will be a noticeable improvement.
[editline]24th August 2015[/editline]
You have put more thought into the later one though, the cats back legs especially are much better and the proportions overall are improved. Just keep smart in quantity.
I got a question for anyone here:
Does anyone else feel overwhelmed with references? I've heard multiple times that it is best to save references/images you like even if you don't end up using them. Thing is, I've never given myself the opportunity to even do so and I want to, but I have no idea where to start out of the 10,000 files worth of references.
Does anyone know if any of the Toon Boom softwares are any good for frame-by-frame animation, or if it's a series that I should look into when considering 2D-esque animation?
Because for some reason, my parents are willing to spend their retirement money for all these programs for me. They don't seem to mind just as long as I'm actually being productive with the softwares, but I don't want to them to waste their retirement money and never get it back when there could be cheaper alternatives that would at least be good enough.

Nevermind, but I still recommend Toonz or TVPaint.

Toon Boom does support hand drawn frame by frame pretty decently, at least the little I've tried. It can also be used for rigged animations too. They have a trial if you want to give it a shot.
I know this is more of a visual arts thread, but I just wanted to say I got invited to do a live interview with a radio show for my podcast. So if you're trying to get your art discovered, keep trying! Don't give up, it'll start with something small of course. But keep going.

I've never really saved a ref unless I was painting from it right then, but then again 90% of my refs are from movies/shows/games/shit that I enjoy that I'd like to be able to do from imagination at one point.
Of course the other 10% is landscapes or still life images off google to touch up on certain skills. I'm really guilty about not actually studying from life except once in a blue moon, but my study habits are all around shit, so
fucked up this portrait real bad haha

Also, does anyone know what would be a good computer for art-related things?
My dad wants to get a Mac. I'm not sure how much of a problem compatibility it going to be since I know that there are some softwares that aren't supported for Macs, but I honestly can't really think of a specific computer to get, honestly. Plus, he kinda wants to order the computer within an hour.

Could you be more specific about art-related things? It basically all comes down to preference unless there are specific programs you need that are only on one OS.

I guess softwares ranging from Photoshop to 3DSMax to Zbrush, so stuff like digital painting, modeling, sculpting and probably animation. Honestly, I'm kinda being rushed with this as my dad wants to get all these things for me as soon as possible before he ends up using the money for something else or somehow losing it.
Destiny fan art again... trying a different style.

This one looks a lot closer to the ref.
Sadly I like it less because of that, but it still looks good.

I animated a dino, guys. Pay no attention to the stretchy arms and the extra scale that appears out of nowhere. :v:
[sp]Also the general sloppiness[/sp]
That extra joint in the hind legs is really confusing for some reason.

Really wouldnt recommend getting a mac for digital art. Even for a mac that will run 3D programs okay...ish you'll be paying out your ass, you could put half the money you would from a mac into a computer thats twice if not more powerful.
The only great thing about a mac (from my point of view) is that they retain their value for a long time.
Also from the software side of things, some companies (such as autodesk) have a student licence program, it doesnt matter what your a student in, you can have their software for free or at discounted rates.
if you can afford it get a mac. if not, don't
i got this macbook for free from school and it's really nice to do digital art on
The only things you should consider is:
1) Price/performance
Mac's are known to be overpriced for sure, but still it's not like you get a piece of junk either. You can get more performance out of the same money if you spend it on a Windows computer or even buy the exact same specifications for less money. But you won't be buying a Mac, so see:
2) Interface
A Mac is just a computer, there is no super huge big difference between a Mac and a Windows despite running on two very different "engines". What is very different is the way the interface works. A Mac likes having everything float around on the screen (to the despair of some and extreme joy of others) and group it all into the logo of the program rather than using a taskbar.
If you're used to using Windows you'll have to spend a few days getting used to all the differences in how folders, windows, taskbar, settings and such works. They are all so similar, yet so very very different.
3) Programs
Mac has some programs Windows doesn't have and vice versa
4) Apple
You will be buying an Apple product and everything that comes with that. The cost to send it to support will be more expensive, but it looks good. You will have seamless intergration with everything Apple related so if you own any other Apple device syncing the two and sharing media between them will be painful fast and easy. Integration with anything not Apple can on the other hand have it's caviets and hassles, but that's on a purely case by case basis, even an external harddisk can have problems connecting to a Mac depending on the type of disk it is.
A Mac is not better nor worse at any task you can throw at it, just like a Windows machine it can handle anything you throw at it as long as it's got the hardware for it. It's just a different wrapping for the same hardware.
The days of Mac's being virus free and better at media jobs (video rendering, graphic design, photo retouching, etc) are long gone, since over a decade ago, but some people still have this idea in their head that a Mac is better, especially since so many media companies invested in Macs, so it became their infrastructure, and that's costly to change (nor necessary), so it's become the norm for many firms working with artistic careers.
I want to buy a new tablet. The surface of my current one, Intuos3, is getting a bit bumpy from erosion :( Been using it since 2008.
