fyi it's japanese. please don't confuse them.
I'm am also fairly certain that XX式粉粥 is taken from a chinese sign because it is read from right to left, which is NOT the Japanese writing system for 横書き.
lesson learned: make your sci fi robot italian next time to prevent a page filled with debate
I just registered gr8m8.co and these are possible logo designs:

I don't think it'll be a functional site, I'm just going to add it to my portfolio which I need to start asap.

I was trying to use this as a reference, it was harder than I thought. At first I could't tell if the artist was being lazy and didn't want to finish one of the legs or if it being obscured by angle.

i finished that WIP i posted like 4 hours earlier

You should use photographic references rather than someone else's art when trying to learn how to draw something.
I would also suggest switching to pencil and paper for a while and learning some of the basic concepts of drawing such as simplifying your subject into simpler forms. The site I got that video from has a some good videos for beginners in sections 2 and 3 if you want to take a look.

Well, these are pretty good designs, but also pretty obvious once you think about it. Have you done any sort of braintstorming thumbnails or anything?
Again, not saying these are bad designs, but, you can always push yourself further. trying making 20 different designs with the same idea in mind. Like, look at non-typographical solutions.
Giving a sheet of designs and saying 'which is best' isn't really a good way to go about getting a critique ever, I don't think.
The more important question is either
-I'm trying to express these values/ideas/moods through this image - is it working?
or
-What values/ideas/moods do each of these express?
And then go from there.
Branding, concept art, design, illustration - it's all about expressing things. Design principles of balance, colour, tone, etc, can all be ironed out. The most important thing is making sure you're expressing what you are supposed to be expressing.

I completely agree, Saying "take these designs and combine them" is the worst, since combinging designs is not an idea, but multiple ideas. When a client asks you to combine ideas, it is going against the ideas that you had in the first place.

Yep. taking one idea and combining it with another because a client "thinks it is a good idea" is usually a really bad idea. They do not have training in design. You are the designer.

Hmm, not necessarily. If a client says 'take these two other company logos and combine them' then you'd try and pull out what each of those logos is about and then do some designs that represent both of those in a harmonious way. Unless they're giving you two completely antithetical sources, like Burger King and The Karma Sutra Warehouse, in which case maybe have a word with them about why they're being dumb.
I'm not a logo designer nor have I had a whole lot of client work though, so take that with a pinch of salt
I was talking about two original ideas (Like I came up with these 2 ideas, choose between them, not choose both of them,)not two existing ideas. If they are asking you to combine two existing ideas that are not your own then that is a problem on it's own. If you are me, then you have to try and convince them that they need to convey their own brand values, not the values of someone else. But this is pretty unrelated to LaughingStock's idea. They are all interesting typographical solutions, but they are all the same typographical solution. Have you done any thumbnailing ideas to come up with other ideas? Possibly ideas that are not typographic, and are instead something that has to do with iconography?
You can also hand the client a worksheet with some questions that are designed to give you an idea of their values, including brand values. You can often even teach them something that they didn't even know about their own company.

IMHO combined idea should not be taken or discarded directly; it should be treated as an additional, independent idea.
It's like a multiple choice problem:
A) XXX
B) YYY
C) ZZZ
D) A & B
E) All of the above
turns into:
A) XXX
B) YYY
C) ZZZ
D) III
E) LLL
Statistically speaking, you will not score 100% if you always pick E or never pick E in a large enough sample size.

Sure, it is an additional idea, but it is an idea that has most likely come from a mind that has not considered it's creative merit. If you've come up with multiple ideas for a client, with different intentions for various ideas, then when your client wants to come along and say "A should go with B" then they are probably wrong, since A has completely different intentions than B. The multiple choice aspect doesn't matter. It is the wisdom of actually thinking of what each idea actually means or represents.

There are a lot of assumptions there too -- there is no telling that a non-creative intended mind cannot introduce a creative idea. All, they should all be considered and weighted independently.
Its been awhile since I've posted in the creative thread and I haven't posted in it at all since CC was obliterated but I thought I'd share my latest piece since I just got back into drawing.

Thanks for the feedback and interesting discussion, there's definitely a lot more I could explore with the branding. I don't know what kind of a vibe I want the site to give off yet, but it's likely to be sort of rigid/simple. Here are a few more I made:

None in particular look too memorable or stand out so I may need to try something more extreme. Half of them look like generic grocery brands. This will probably be a good time to practice with the pen tool since I'm still shit at that.
FYI, I speak both...
The ones on the left hand side of the image are all shared characters... both Japanese Kanji and Traditional Chinese.
Also, Kanji does mean Chinese characters, if you translate into English.
and in this case, the only character that is not shared between Japanese Kanji and Traditional Chinese is 薬 vs 藥, which is too blurry to make out in the background...
Not to mention that 粉粥 is a Chinese phrase, not Japanese...
and yes, foreground has Katagana, but I'm only talking about the Kanji 漢字 (aka Chinese character) in the background
funnily enough traditional chinese is used only in cantonese and sometimes taiwanese and never in modern Mandarin chinese, which is what i'm talking about.

Finally finished this!
Looks great!
One thing though, 'Englander' is actually spelled with an ä in this case - I translated the whole thing into German, but I'm not sure if the meaning would translate very well:
Achtung! Engländer hinter uns!
(Or maybe "Achtung! Britische Flieger auf Achtern!" - British Planes on aft! - This is just my interpretation though, not sure how accurate that would sound)
Hope this helps :)
Also, it seems like the gunner notifies the other crew members of an enemy, and then the pilot says "got him" even though they are getting the shit shot out of them, and haven't gotten him at all.
edit: actually it looks like the gunner is positioned next to another windows right next to him. I am not sure where that position would even be on the plane.

gott means god. that's all i got out of 4 years of hs german lol
anyways the drawings inside the plane look cool but you should experiment with the clouds/sky a bit, it looks a bit inconsistent/distracting
I wanted to take german in HS, but it wasn't available. I had to take spanish instead.
You wouldn't figure that my spanish teacher used to be a german teacher. But she was.

Danke schön! This was pretty heavily inspired by old British "Commando" comic books, which printed dialogue spoken by German characters in English, with certain notable phrases and words in German, like this bottom left panel
[img_thumb]http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CgU7eo3jpPM/VEvfhq8jFMI/AAAAAAAAo3U/aN4EtKtw_54/s1600/Commando-4752-04-05.jpg[/img_thumb]
Still I always enjoying learning a bit of German and knowing the subject matter I draw I'm sure it'll come in handy someday soon.

Gott im himmel is like the German version of "Oh my god!", which you might say when you're getting the shit shot out of you :v
The gunner is here:

Yeah i wasn't sure exactly how to handle that... I don't think I'll go back and fix it now but yeah I agree
Yeah, sprinkling english with foreign phrases seems the best way to do it
Anyways, any of you ever need some translations or other german shenanigans, just ask :)
