I am a photographer, so luckily I have a good grasp on perspective and such. And the greyscale thing is a good idea. I'm working on turning an ink sketch into a painting now. I'll post it when it's done.
EDIT:

When I say perspective, I mean linear perspective - 1, 2 and 3 point perspective.

I recommend painting real things from life and photo exclusively when you start out, otherwise you're essentially guessing what things should look like. Observation and building up a "visual library" in your brain is 90% of painting. Remember, everybody can trace. It's taking what's in front of you / in your minds eye and translating that which is the part that needs skill.
I know. But since I had so little practice even using the paint tools in GIMP, I decided to do a one point trace. To get a feel for the applying and blending of the paints. I wanted to do that before I move to more three dimensional pieces. I would like to get very good at landscapes eventually.
Done with this one.

I know a number of people use gimp for painting but I personally find it atrocious and unbearable. Don't get me wrong, I use it all the time and love it for general image manipulation.
I personally use Krita and I highly recommend it. It's performant and versatile.
If you want a more traditional real-paint experience then ArtRage is very good at that and not expensive.
If you want sketching and figuring out ideas on an infinite canvas with the ability to scale in and out (perfect for brainstorming and thumbnailing I find) then Mischief.
There are others but those are the ones I like best and use. All the pros seem to use photoshop so I'd go with that if you can, but not everybody has a big wallet or an eyepatch.

into something not yellow. gold and black now, with flowers of gold and a heart on the chest which you cant quite make out here.
If you want to improve your art, you are in need of realism photo studies blazedol. Great artists who painted with abstract styles like Picasso and Van Gogh were masters of realism. It's a step you can't skip if you want your abstract art to be great - otherwise the abstract "style" will just be a combination of carelessness and coverups rather than intentional manipulations of realism.
I'm saying this not to be an arse, but because I think you need to take a different approach if you want to get better.
edit: Oh great, pageking. Better draw something.

Thanks! I'll check those out. I do have Photoshop, but it didn't read the pressure sensitivity of my pen. I didn't mind GIMP, so if those are better, I'm eager to see how well they work.
if you don't mind me weighing in - from my own personal artistic journey i've learned it's less about being able to draw photo realistically and more about learning how life works through observation. paying attention to things like people's faces, the texture of bark, the inner workings of a car, the machinations of light, whatever you're interested in drawing, and then trying over and over to recreate them in your work, is vital. doing studies of photographs is important in its own way, for some artistic pursuits more than others, but a truly great artist knows what it is they're drawing very, very well
I did a wee thumbnail.

It's the entrance to a catacomb. The structures are supposed to be mountain-sized, so I'm not sure how I can emulate that feeling. I had no idea how to properly set up some perspective grids so I attempted to freehand the entire thing. I know I really need to do some material studies, but the main focus of this was to practice perspective and lighting.
Natural forms are usually a breeze since everything is organic and irregular, but I have quite some trouble when working on artificial structures such as buildings, etc. When I look at the work of people who do environmental art featuring cities or towns, I can never understand how they get everything to be so straight, neat, and proportionate. Any thoughts, advice, or criticism?
The 2nd and 3rd from the left pillars dont point to the same point as the rest.
Also, to show size, you could put a small boat and a small dock near the foreground to show just how massive it really is.
So I'm guessing you, too, read about the moral system recently? :v:
I like this Krita! Thanks!

I tried Inktober. I proceeded to draw a mutated failure of my hand, a somewhat cute ghost thing with smaller cute ghosts on its head, and some... Monstrosity of a stick figure. I then slapped myself with the pen in shame and then drew a disappointed iguana from reference.

I wish I had better pens than my school pens, but oh well.

I just noticed the ruler's increments and how small that picture actually is. A thumbnail for a future piece, perhaps? I HOPE? :v:
Does anyone know any artists that are taking commissions right now? I've searched tumblr and some other places, but it seems like all these sites are overrun with some pretty bad artists or really NSFW artists, not to sound mean or anything.
a lot of nsfw artists that are good do some pretty good sfw art

Heyo, I'm Forty People, and here is an example of some of the stuff you'll expect for me to crank out. I'll add more stuff here sometimes.

I'll say with complete honesty that I'm quite the amateurando at art, but hopefully I'll get the juice and become the best. I'm using FireAlpaca to make my stuff.

Self Commentary: [sp]I need to get used to line weight a little bit since this is my first time actually working with it. It looks great in some places, but really inconsistent in others. Also, I can only really draw "chibi" version of things cause I am not so good at anatomical proportions. I generally understand anatomy, but, again, proportions elude me. Another kinda weird note: I can only make really nice lines via really fast strokes. If I try to do slow strokes, I get REALLY bad, shaky lines.[/sp]
Anatomy is practice practice practice. Keep practicing and you'll get it.

Love it! Next time save your high saturation for the focal point - in this case, the planes. The ground is kinda distracting when its as bright as it is.
This strongly reminds me of that bit in half life 2 where you come out of a little sewer tunnel and go out onto this bit where this helicopter attacks you, and there's a turret at the end in the direction your guy is running in that you shoot APCs which drive over that bridge with.
Awesome perspective, very clean.
I'd be lying if I said HL2 wasn't an influence. When the teacher asked what the narrative was, I just said Red Dawn happened.

It looks to me like you're generalizing the breasts - look closer at your reference and try to really replicate what's happening there. Boobs are hard

For making things feel big, look up atmospheric perspective. Also add some people or people-sized objects to help give a sense of scale.
The best thing you can do to get perspective correct quickly is to construct a rough grid on a new layer. Look up one-point and two-point perspective, there's tutorials all over the internet for stuff like that. Shift-clicking with the brush tool in Photoshop also helps :v
In other news, i finished that bridge for class
