Here's a philosophical discussion topic. Who are the people in your dreams?
I'm referring to the people that don't have any connection to anyone you know in your waking life.
In my dreams, everyone has their own distinct personality. Their personality may or may not be similar to mine. Some clash in everything I believe in, while some are essentially another me.
What gets me is they seem sentient. They think for themselves, and make decisions based on the world around them. I see it happening.
I want to know who these people are. Are they alive? What happens to them when you wake up?
It's disconcerting to think that they cease to exist when you awake. They had a life of their own. It's almost like it's not fair.
The other question is how does our brain do this? How is our brain able to create so many different "complete" minds and keep track of them all as they were individuals?
family for me. also same here
Hmm... Weird, never thought about it. Must just be your imagination or something.

The people in your dreams are no different than the characters in a movie. Your brain isn't doing anything special by creating them.
Usually they are a combination of people you know, see on tv, see in video games, etc.
For example you could have a family member pop out with someone elses head or something weird like that.
They are either randomly generated in your mind (usually lack in detail) or they are either photographic memories from the past.
I was once a guy with mildly long hair with a red shirt and jeans, and it was third-person, then I got shot. Don't know why the hell I became that
As for the brain part, we don't even know the full potential of the human mind.
We only use like 10% of our brains or something.
I like to think that like since God made us in his image, if we unlocked the other 90% of our brain, then we'd have fucking telekinetic powers and shit, and be kinda God-like, in a way.
When you see random people in your sleep, its usually people you have seen in the streets or you've walked by in your daily life, your brain memorizes these faces. Usually it also mixes a bunch of faces up to what you find pleasing.
There's also a certain part of our brain that memorizes just faces. If that part is fucked then you can't tell the difference between faces. Would be cool to see what that's like.
A combination of strangers and people I know.
I tend to have fairly lengthy dreams about saving the world (seriously, that's like all I dream about), but I remember this one time when I was around 8 years old when I met some people in one of my dreams and we were all running around saving the world as usual, having a great time. When I felt myself waking up, I started hugging them all, telling them I had to leave, and they made me promise never to forget them. I obviously never did, even though they were only figments of my own imagination. So yeah, I get what you're saying OP, it is disconcerting, even if you know they don't really exist.

:colbert:
I'm not so much as asking who are in your dreams, but what they are. How do they work? Are they alive? What happens to them when you awake?

you're thinking too hard (no pun intended)
they're just figments of your imagination, created by your brain to populate the dream you're having

You had to bring your religious views here, don't you ?
They're not alive. It's just people you saw in the street but didn't notice. Your brain memorizes the faces even though you don't realize it, and just imagines them while you dream. That's all. Just your imagination.
These threads make me sad because I don't dream or I don't remember the dreams.
Everyone in the whole world has my face.

Do they have your testicles too?
They're just figments of your imagination, albeit being very intelligent.. You'd be extremely surprised at what is capable in your dreams. The brain is an astonishing tool.
Check out this site and read around a bit, they have tons of information about dreams and lucid dreaming.

There has to be more to it than that though. How does the brain assign a mind of it's own to each individual? The minds are far too intricate to just create on a whim, and there are a lot of them too.
As for thinking too hard, well that's a good thing. Deep thought unlocks new doors.
Watch 'Life on Mars' then shit bricks. A friend of mine was in a lucid dream for 2 weeks and ion reality it was 4 hours.

Trust me, as unlikely as it seems, this is really all there is to it. For example, one guy had a dream where he was controlling and two different people at once, he even saw what they both saw at the same time. He couldn't conceive the idea when he awoke. Another guy had 360 vision.
Read this thread here. It answers exactly what you're asking.

How do you interpret a 360 degree FOV?
Watch 'Life on Mars' then shit bricks. A friend of mine was in a lucid dream for 2 weeks and ion reality it was 4 hours.
I had that happen once. I woke up so damned disoriented.
How do you interpret a 360 degree FOV?
Exactly. Stuff like this is only capable in dreams. When you go to sleep, the logic 'part' of your brain shuts down, letting your imagination run wild. This means that you will accept anything that happens, and won't be bound by what you think is possible or impossible.
Someone post the picture of the dream guy.
