Since the release of Apple's iPod Touch in September, hackers have been striving to unlock to full potential of the device. They have been successful, but Apple continues to update the device's firmware in order to counteract their efforts. What the hackers have done by jailbreaking the device is they have exploited security weaknesses in the iPod Touch in order to install the Installer app which links any Touch user (within a wi-fi) to a myriad of Third Party applications such as games, tip calculators, and custom backgrounds.
The most effective way to jailbreak an iPod Touch is to jailbreak it in firmware version 1.1.1 using jailbreakme.com. However, if you have updated to 1.1.2 or 1.1.3, then you must get a hold of the 1.1.1 firmware and Shift-click update through iTunes Once you are in 1.1.1 you can navigate your Touch to jailbreakme.com through safari and allow the website to automatically hack the device.
If you wish to update to 1.1.2 or 1.1.3 after this and remain jailbroken there are ways to do this,
By the way, some users have experienced problems in the process of jailbreaking (most of which can be corrected by restoring the device through iTunes), but Apple will not service Touches that have been jailbroken even if under warranty, so proceed with extreme caution and do not try to blame any issues that may occur on the hacking community.
