Usually you pull a tab in the corner or in the middle of the shortest side really tightly and pull towards you, at least, that's how my window works.

The eye wall is what you have to worry about. I don't think your windows will be harmed. Wouldn't have hurt to tape them up though.

Hurricane clouds are incredible. When Rita was about to hit we went outside and the whole sky was covered in clouds that were all moving in a west fairly fast. It was quite a sight. You could make out a slight curvature to them. The wind was really blowing too.
