that's fine, i had problems learning to song when i first started playing, just keep practicing and you'll get the hang of it.
yeah it's just kinda fast, but i like it. i have no clue how to learn the rhythm thing though, where people constantly hold the rhythm and only actually strum every now and then. it's like impossible for me.

I can't play anything and I'm not getting guitar lessons so I feel like I can make no progress at all. I'm really trying to find anything I can use but I just simply can't do any of it and now I'm super depressed and frustrated. this really sucks.

I'm at month ten and occasionally still get the same feeling.

sounds like an 80s blackened-thrash song [editline]21st April 2014[/editline]
I can't play anything and I'm not getting guitar lessons so I feel like I can make no progress at all. This makes me think: How do people who want to play metal even start playing? It's so much twiddly stuff :v: Must be hard to start.
This makes me think: How do people who want to play metal even start playing? It's so much twiddly stuff :v: Must be hard to start.
what's 'twiddly' mean? i started with basic things like chords, then i moved immediately to stuff like Metallica and Sabbath, especially Metallica. Metallica was pretty great for practicing rhythm and picking precision, things like that. as soon as i had developed a decent picking hand i switched to Megadeth to get into the more shreddy stuff, what with some of their riffs being really fast and lead lick like and all. and now after two and a half years i'm playing solos pretty smoothly. i dunno how it happened but starting slow with simple shit and then moving on to more technical type things helped i guess
sweet im gonna be getting lessons from someone on reddit who studied music. seems legit, a guy with a part time job ao he has a lot of time on his hands. gonna be over skype.
cool, haven't heard of anyone doing lessons over skype. i've actually never taken lessons before, i just learned off the internet and practicing myself
Zar don't be disappointed about how hard guitar is and your progress. The most important thing though is to slow it down and practice it step by step. Do it a million times if you have to. You need to build finger strength and muscle memory and you need to get both before you can go fast reliably. I've been playing for about half a year and I still can't play the solo for Peace of Mind. Something that I'm sure every guitarist in this thread could learn in a couple of minutes without thinking about it. For now just watch your fingers and compare them to videos on youtube and such. Make sure that you're playing properly. If you're doing something different ask and remember that just because John Petrucci does it doesn't make it the best way. When play guitar I use a closed fist for my picking hand rather than anchoring my hand with my last three fingers Most guitarists I see usually do anchor their hand on something. But seriously don't get discouraged. Also look up Breaking the Law by Judas Priest. Its a pretty easy song to learn. Also look at songs even if they seem hard. I still can't play parts of Walk This Way at speed but I can play them sped down. If you can't do it with a couple of days of practice put it on the backburner and practice something else. Most of the time when you go back to it you'll end up being better at it than if you had practiced it nonstop for a week.
it wouldn't hurt to check out guitar pro 5 either don't bother with 6 it's terrible

I found once I learned a bunch of chords and chord progressions playing became this ever expanding knowledge. Once I crossed this point I started to really enjoy playing, before then it was frustrating. Enjoy it to the point where I play for 6+ hours a day, instead of picking it up for a few minutes. I find learning how to play rhythm guitar is far more useful than learning solos, but that's just my two cents. just keep playing until it clicks.
I've done it after 3 years and 4 months of guitar playing I finally learned it the pentatonic scale
I've done it after 3 years and 4 months of guitar playing I finally learned it the pentatonic scale
In all positions I hope
fuck that, one is enough now all he has to do is superlocrian and he has all bases covered
yes in all positions what sucks is that the scale is like "hey dude, play these notes, they will sound good!" and because of habit my response is something like "fuck you I play whatever I want" that's a cute idea, going to learn that one, be back in three years I hope
I learnt The Trooper by Iron Maiden yesterday, haven't got the solo yet though that shit is fast.
yes in all positions what sucks is that the scale is like "hey dude, play these notes, they will sound good!" and because of habit my response is something like "fuck you I play whatever I want" that's a cute idea, going to learn that one, be back in three years I hope
Felt the same way honestly for a long time but now I use the Pentatonic all the time and if you deviate away from the pentatonic and mess up you can easily hop back on the scale.
I don't know any scale by name and I can only play notes out of my head, never learned any scales... and yet I can play solos over stuff. I should start learning scales.. [editline]22nd April 2014[/editline] 8 years into playing guitar I think its time
This makes me think: How do people who want to play metal even start playing? It's so much twiddly stuff :v: Must be hard to start.
I started with easy Thrice songs then moved onto Underoath and We Came As Romans
for the first time in a while one of my fingers is hurting from playing guitar. weird, the last time that happened was probably like 4 months ago and I never took a break from playing guitar.
This is a great film, it's sad but at the same time it is so damn inspirational. I remember hearing about this guy some time ago and my father just reminded me of it today.
Listen to The Ninja by Cacophony. It's Becker and Friedman not even at their peaks and it is amazing dual lead sex

I always thought he finished the whole thing before his condition got bad. I had no idea he continued to record it after he was unable to even play. Fucking amazing passion.
