So one of my buddies just got an amazing argument for getting strap locks.
Namely a chipped body (apparently somewhat similar to this), a snapped string and a little bit of lost blood to top it off.
I had a guitar fall about 8 years ago and have been using the rubber washers from a grolsch bottle ever since
[editline]10th August 2014[/editline]
on one particularly heavy 14.5 pound bass I have the strap pins and screws replaced with fender washers and big beefy lag bolts
You mean these?

That is some ghetto shit.

it keeps the straps on. it used to be popular for classic vintage guitars where you don't want to replace the original hardware. When I first started playing it was sort of the big thing among les paul players because apparently some popular les paul player did it
He was jamming with his band, leaned forward ("because it looked cool and I wanted to try it") and his strap slipped off. He tried to grab his guitar but pulled his highest string instead with full force on his fingertips before falling on top of it on a concrete floor.
"Dude, don't you have strap locks or something?"
"No, I don't. In hindsight, I probably deserve this."
At least he can take solace in the fact that he isn't someone Justinguitar apparently saw, who broke a headstock off a vintage Les Paul because he didn't have strap locks.
I bought a les paul custom with a broken headstock for $300 a few years back, I fixed it right up and sold it for $2000. les pauls break like that so constantly that everyone who's ever worked as a guitar repairman knows how to fix them

I have fixed 3 broken LP headstocks in about 5 years, I think people are finally starting to realize that they should somewhat take care of their guitars. More often now I find myself fixing broken headstocks on cheaper guitars, the last one I fixed was a complete break on an LTD which boggled my mind. Even though it was a slanted headstock it had a pretty beefy volute, the thing must have taken a nasty drop to snap the way it did.
Either way I fixed it up and it is still playing today along with all the LPs I have done.
I'm so glad my guitar is still in one piece, I fell down the stairs while holding it and it survived with only a chip on the back of the body. I've fallen over many other times while holding it only breaking a string.

The fact that my ibanez is still in one piece is a testament to the strength of their guitars, it has been in the hands of the TSA twice now just shoved into a box with no protection as well as all the abuse it has seen from me.
okay, does anyone on the entire fucking planet know what zakk wylde set his gear settings to when he recorded No More Tears
I have been trying to figure this shit out for years and nothing on the entire internet can type in the fucking settings he used, I know he uses an SD-1 and a JCM800 but I can't get them to sound right without the settings he used
I think maybe dial in his usual sound but with presence closer to 7 or 8 and a tiny tiny bit of rotovibe
a lot of that tone is in the fingers too
Man I am not even through summer quarter here in college and I am already getting excited about fall quarter when I start the audio engineering program down here at SFCC. I am actually a little bit terrified but at the same time I am extremely excited, anxious I guess I would call it. It's gonna be a hell of a lot of fun, while I could have picked an easy major I decided to do what I want to do.
I am lucky to have experience as a musician as well as an engineer already but I still feel anxious like crazy.
what's it about exactly? do you just fourier-analyze signals all day or do you actually do something fun?
i'm an engineering student myself.

I would post more about this but I am currently on my phone so I will just link to wiki which will explain it in much more detail than I currently can on my phone.

And just for good measure a link to the actual program page at my college.

I would agree with the fact that Zakk's tone is from his fingers. I don't think I've ever heard anyone get close to his tone properly.
I did the thing with the bridge and tremolo arm to get the G-string to go up a minor 3rd and etc.
It's a quarter of a tone off but it stays in tune soo much better, how could I get it exactly right?
edit: oh wait I probably know
e: perfect
does anyone have a DS-1 pedal? so far im enjoying the hell out of it
does anyone have a DS-1 pedal? so far im enjoying the hell out of it
I have it, I think it's mediocre
The tone knob makes it sound REALLY shit imo, but if you turn it all the way down the distortion is okay ish
Rest in peace my childhood hero...

that acoustic sounds so goddamn rich
that acoustic sounds so goddamn rich
The strings are 4 weeks old, daily played over 30 minutes and they sound dead to me in comparison to a newer set. I really need to put on these new elixiers I got for 20€ it will be 10 times better!
[editline]13th August 2014[/editline]
But you are right, the harmonics and sounds this jumbo body with the sitka spruce+ top produces is out of this world to my ears. My other fender acoustic sounds dead in comparison.
Should I buy a Marshall or 5150 4x12 cab for ~$150? I mean, just bought an amp and 2x12 that has left me very satisfied, but the offer came out of the blue.
What Marshall cab? What speakers are in either?

I have a couple other covers from these guys I wanna do in the next couple days, their songs aren't that challenging so it's all good fun. The song above is simple but a blast to play, some songs just have a vibe that really pulls you in and gets the blood going.
Shit guys I moved into my boarding school. 4 days in and I've got a reputation among the girls who overheard me playing my acoustic. My roomies told me girls came into our room and asked who "Zar" was and if he would play them a song. Also heard my name and good things being said when I walked past people, they didn't know what I looked like so it was me they were talking about who walked past. And I got a spot in the schools band. This summer (if I'm good enough to stay in the band) I will play for over 400 people.
i thought the "guitar players get all the girls" thing was just a myth or urban legend
Its intriguing yet sad sometimes, as the attention I recieve is the same whether I play something complicated or difficult, vs just strumming 3 chords.
i thought the "guitar players get all the girls" thing was just a myth or urban legend
The fact that 'white guy with acoustic guitar' is practically a genre on its own nowadays (and a fucking popular one at that) should say enough.
i thought the "guitar players get all the girls" thing was just a myth or urban legend
I thought so too. So weird. There's also a guy with a terrible cheap beginner guitar with plastic strings who tries a little hard to pick up girls with it I guess. Either way I'm not doing it for girls or anything. The walls are a little thin so they just overheard me playing and word got out.
i thought the "guitar players get all the girls" thing was just a myth or urban legend
Pretty much any instrument can be used to pick up women except oboe.
it doesn't even have to be a musical instrument really
fucking surgeons taking our wimminz
just read through the first few pages of this thread

I like page 2, I remember when I was drinking all the time I would always spill beer on my guitar. It was somehow unavoidable but at the same time I was spilling it everywhere because when I am drunk I am incredibly clumsy. Steady as a rock when it comes to walking and balancing but put anything in my hands and it is bound to end up on the floor.
